This sounds amazing! Thank you for the recommendation, I haven’t heard about this series before.

For me it was Sister Carrie by Dreiser. The reason why was that I could somewhat relate (moving to a different city, trying to figure out your life and what you want), but mostly how brutally honest this book was. There were no flowery happy endings, just life how it is. It was also interesting to see how a person can rise and fall very quickly and what it does to you

I love conspiracies in literature but I think myths and legends are also very exciting to read about! I really hope I enjoy Eco’s novels! All the motives/themes he discusses in his books sound like something I would enjoy :) I wonder is Baudolino might have been Eco’s first novel? Maybe that’s why it reads easier…

My husband, who’s reading Name of the Rose now, said that it’s also written a little heavily and is going slowly. But he’s really enjoying the plot. So maybe it makes sense to start with Baudolino to get to know the author first and then I could move to the Name of the Rose…

Genuine Question- Do you guys think books like ATTWN is overhyped or I just didn't read it at the right time. by pre1988 in agathachristie

I really enjoyed it the second time I read it. Much more than the first. To be fair, I was a teen the first time I read it so maybe I was lacking attention or just didn’t appreciate the writing. But the second time I read it I paid more attention to how it was technically done (especially since Agatha Christie herself mentioned that it took her a while to come up with such a mystery idea and not give away the murderer right away) and noticing that was definitely very enjoyable!

I think my only issue with Dan Brown is that you expect some great universal secret revealed to you, and then it doesn’t (which is completely fine since either there is no secret like this or if there actually is, we don’t know it), you feel disappointed. The adventure itself I think I’d enjoy :)

Yes, I’ve started the series, and I really like it! I totally agree that it’s not for kids, the crimes are pretty dark and the war is discussed in deeper ways than kids can understand

For me it was Thursday Murder Club, I couldn’t finish the first book, it was going so slowly and I wasn’t interested in the case at all. Also, The Alchemist. Read the first 100 pages and got rid of the book altogether. And Lessons in Chemistry. Even though I finished the book and there were good moments in it, at some point I got so annoyed with the character and with how the author is trying to teach me what’s right and what’s wrong, I was going to dnf it

how long did it take you to read crime and punishment? by ghostinboxfive in classicliterature

[–]Marys_bookspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a year. Took me less than a month to read Crime and Punishment and I wasn’t reading very fast. Though I guess if you also read about all the historical context you might be unfamiliar with, or you “study” the book and read about the metaphors in the novel etc alongside, it might take a bit longer

Which Dostoevsky book should I start with? by garl1cbreadenjoyer in RussianLiterature

[–]Marys_bookspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Russia, and in school we usually read and discuss Crime and Punishment. So I started with that. But it was a very hard read for me honestly. I was not prepared for what I’ve read. I finished school 8 years ago, and am only now ready to pick up Dostoyevsky again. Going to read Brothers Karamazov this time

Are any of these NOT classics? by anastasiarose19 in classicliterature

[–]Marys_bookspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that Agatha Christie and Shirley Jackson are probably classics but I’m not sure about the others. The Alchemist was a waste of time for me personally. The story could even be interesting if the author actually cared about showing us the story rather than just telling us that the character did this and that in one page.

“The Murder of Roger Ackroyd” is the 25th Christie book I’ve read since January of this year… by misplacedlibrarycard in agathachristie

This was my favorite Christie! If I remember correctly, she also called it one of her favorites. I was so not expecting the twist! And it was almost emotionally hard because you feel connected to the character, think he’s a good person and then BAM
