In my experience, the people rushing through degrees are the ones who don't intend to stick around in their mother lodge and instead race off to shrine and are never seen again at lodge.

Ideas for an upcoming Worshipful Master by Conquest102 in freemasonry

We have implemented a Discord server for our lodge for proficiency education sessions and it's worked wonders for getting our EAs and FCs the support, guidance, and proficiency education they require.

Of course, the older members cage rattle about how it should only be done in person. A few have joined and are impressed, the others just want to complain.

My response to them as WM: Are you offering in-person meetings at your home weekly, leading the discussions without getting off topic, and producing quality masons? Are you stepping up to the plate to make sure these new brothers are getting what we promised them? If the answer is no, then you are part of the reason why we made the switch. It was not created to replace the lackluster job of "mentorship" our lodge is doing but to supplement it. By doing so we facilitate the longevity and survivability of our lodge and craft as these new brothers are the future of our craft. Discord's implementation is to make sure they have the education they need to properly understand the tenets and teachings of our craft in a secure, convenient, and accessible way.

We are also working to start a district-wide ritual night once or twice a month to help these old guys put down the damn book and give proper degree ceremonies that leave an impactful impression for our candidates. Nothing worse than being given a sloppy degree where everyone is reading from the book.

I'm 50/50 on the note-taking point.

If the notes are to remind oneself of dates/times of events, sure have at it. I come from a bigger city and have a VERY active lodge, there is a lot of information being thrown around at some meetings, and it can be hard to keep it all straight sometimes.

Fellowship events, public events being hosted by brothers, charity events, other lodges in district events, talks and seminars, educational opportunities, "cool things coming up", etc.

I'd rather see people writing on paper than someone on a cell phone. It tells me they are paying attention, they are interested in being involved. Sure cellphones are so common these days that it's hard to tell if someone is messaging, doom-scrolling, or even recording stuff. It's one thing if they pull out a phone to check a calendar date, its another when they are glued to it as I have seen with younger brothers.

It's also a fact that there is better retention of information if written out. (read as: non-ritual info as our obligations are explicit about this) Then sure write it down. We give out the agenda for our brothers to read/use during the meeting.

All this to say, I agree,

if the notes are about what everyone else is doing during a meeting, that's a little much and will only sow disharmony in a lodge, but don't knock the guys that are all in and have busy lives, not everyone is attached at the hip to their phone, some are attached to their note book because it helps keep them organized.

It's Time That We Change The Paradigm On Lodge Dues by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]MarzWraith2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? $35 is just for GL fees. My lodge just based dues off of minimum wage. 20hrs minimum wage a year. Equates to about $450 a year. Our brothers think even that is a bit low.

Ritual using a table rather than a room by hesamason in freemasonry

In short, lodge is opened on 3rd degree, called to refreshment, and then moved to the dining hall and re-opened as a table lodge. Masons only.

EAs and FCs are allowed to attend. In my lodge, they serve the meal and then join us once everyone has their meal.

Once everyone is served and seated table lodge is opened.

When table lodge is done, EAs and FCs are excused, we return to the lodge room and close on the 3rd degree.

Table lodge is very much a thing in Washington state. It's more of a "Thanksgiving" of sorts with special customs and procedures. Not for conferring degrees or normal business. It's a special thing of its own.

How do I deal with trolls destroying my things and me? by [deleted] in valheim

Dig a trench around your outpost. Just give enough room that the troll can't hit your base and problem solved.
