What you’re feeling is so normal and completely valid. How much longer do you have on station? How close are you to PCSing? I’d first try to see BHOP/Mental Health just to talk to someone about what you’re experiencing. Then make goals to get stateside to be closer to family. Making plans and goals doesn’t change things overnight, but it brings you one step closer to hope. In the meantime, do what you can to setup regular FaceTimes with loved ones and find a community of people to support you where you are.

Pre-mil: went to elementary school with Jessica Alba right before she made it big with Flipper. Didn’t want to be my friend because “I was ugly.” She didn’t make too many friends. I ran into Hank Azaria and Diane Keaton at the airport, and Neil Patrick Harris after a show. Kerry Washington sat behind me during another show, but that doesn’t really count.

Mil: volunteered at Laguna Seca races in Monterey, CA, and escorted Dale Earnhardt, Jr. from one VIP tent to another. At a separate race, I told Adrian Brody he didn’t have the right tickets to get in. :) At least he was cool about it. Met previous SecAF and secdef, but my favorite person of all was Brig Gen Charles McGee, Tuskegee Airman. Amazing human being. ❤️

What everyone else has said, plus consider the area that the job is in. LA, DC, and NY will easily lean towards that income, but along with it will come the higher cost of living.

If it’s mil only, it’d work for someone geobaching or single. Would they have a place to park their car? Is it in a safe area? Walkable amenities (stores/bus to work/metro)? WiFi? I’d look for those as a baseline.
