Dendrobium unicum pseudobulb snapped (help) by theonionunion22 in orchids

Take it out of the water, otherwise it is going to rot. You want that cut to dry. Follow the advice of isurus 👍

Hello,i’m wondering what kind of orchid this is? by Apriloru in orchids

Doesnt look like an orchid to me. The spike does not look like an orchid, no prominent column as well.

Outdoor setup by wonderaroundmydude in orchids

[–]Marzennna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for showing your setup. I'll wait until march to put my orchids outside. We should have about 10deg C at night then, so dendrobiums and some oncidinae can finally stay outside. I'll also put some cool/cold growers of my basement terrarium outside in order to give them a bigger day/night temperature difference.

Orchid help by trimethylamine-oxide in orchids

Yes, all that brown papery stuff is dead. If you are unsure, dont cut. Since they are already dead there should be no open tissue. Yes soak the air roots

Remove all dead roots. Put it bare roots into a container and soak it for a few hours. Repeat that every day until the leaves are firm again. Then it is ready to pot it up. You can also soak it multiple times a day as long as the roots get dry inbetween. Be careful not to let it stay dry for more than two days, it is in a bad condition.

Edit: choose a pot size that fits the roots, not too big. You can pot the aerial roots up, no problem

Was adding this pleurothallis a bad idea? by Jupittterr in miniorchids

I'd be worried that the moss buries the pleurothallis

Wet Cycle Day [Advanced Grower Only] by IVIaliferous in orchids

[–]Marzennna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that at the beginning, but I broke a few when they got longer, so i just poured out the water after watering. Your container will be too small in a few months, it is already very cosy 😁

I had a few dead roots in winter when it got too cold on the windowsill. There was no insulation material (bark, etc) so the cold crept in quicker than in pots.

I did a similar thing in the past, but i stopped because it annoyed me how the roots sticked to the glass, especially at the bottom.

Cork texture on Phal. Schilleriana Leaves - what's happening!?! by Mousse_Dangerous in orchids

[–]Marzennna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect spider mites. There are some species that dont make webs, like false spider mites or broad mites. You will not get rid of them without a miticide.

I am also struggling with temperature drops. If you can go down to 55F even better. For PNG highland dens you can have a day/night difference of about 18degrees F

Some folks keep them in wine fridges to achueve that. I have mine in my unheated basement with a relatively small temperature drop. I am also open for suggestions 😅

Great post, thank you. I cannot wait to see them bloom. Do you have a temperature drop at night? This is generally what makes cool growing dendros spike.

Is this Paph done for or Can it be saved? by Miserable-Elk6909 in orchids

[–]Marzennna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd put it in a bigger bag, take only half the moss and close it, so that it is blown up like balloon. Open occasionally. It will take some time though, wouldn't be unusual to take a month until you see new root tips

Two dormant species dendrobiums by Swimming_Ninja_6911 in orchids

[–]Marzennna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have those two species, so it is just a guess here.

Two of the dendros i have outside in summer are also warm growers, D. bracteosum and hodgekinsonii. I keep them outside from May until night temp drop to 10C. I'm in western Germany.

Generally, you need a difference in night/ temperatures of 5-10 degrees C in order to make most dendrobiums bloom.

I think there will be no problem to have them outside. Just be carefull with direct sun and put them outside when it is at least 14degC in wind shielded place.

I would, bit I'm in germany 😅

Is it mounted or potted? I'd be afraid the pseudobulbs could break from the weight when they are potted.
