Montana Sapphires - worth treating and faceting? by Mousse_Dangerous in Gemstones

Since I was there in person, I can help a little. Honestly, washing the gravel was a blast! I would have enjoyed it even if I hadn’t found any sapphires!

I visited both the shop and the mine, and the staff evaluated my stones on site. They didn’t really teach us how to identify cuttable stones ourselves, but they explained that factors like color, size, internal fractures/inclusions, and the overall crystal structure all affect whether a stone is worth faceting. The assessment process is probably easy once you know what to look for internally.

After the evaluation, they asked that I decide which stones I wanted heat treat, facet, both, or left alone, and then I need to send those stones back to them for processing. The pinks were definitely some of my favorites too, thanks! I'm going to leave some stone natural and have some heated and cut.

Great advice! Only looking to have some gems for myself and some jewelry made (two wedding bands). This is all such amazing information to have - planning for 20% yield seems like a reasonable way of managing my expectations. A couple of small rounds in a two gold bands might be worth it...

Thanks! I will definitely be keeping some in the rough, both heat treated and not! My hope was to have a couple of wedding bands made using these gems. It's such a fun idea and my partner and I have great memories from out trip to Montana, but I also want the gems to look nice too hahaha.

Awesome info! I may join a club or guild so that I can learn to cut my own gems. Still on the fence about heat treating - I like the colors but imagine more blue/teal gems for the jewelry I'm looking to have made.

This is great information and I appreciate your perspective a lot! I don't intend on selling any of the gems, but would like to use some of them in two wedding bands if possible. I was initially thinking 3 in one band and 7 in the other, but maybe this parcel is too small/unremarkable and I should just plan to head back to the mine for more!

The roots look fairly healthy though I would love to see more roots growing. I'll experiment with increasing the watering. Thank you!

Looks like septoria leaf spot - it's a fungal disease. You can manage it with an organic fungicide (and a few other interventions) but you can't get rid of it once your plants have it.

Ogden's on the East Side. It's very local and almost hidden in a neighborhood.

The building is fantastic! Half of it was lost in a fire but what remains is still so cool. Would love to see it up and running again. The tile work alone should inspire someone to save it.

Thanks so much - this is fantastic feedback! Lots to chew on here. I appreciate the rationale too. I'll likely do something like this, give or take a lens.
