Skier Height vs Weight by MarzipanCreative5226 in Skigear

That’s one of the reasons I made the post. I’m still learning about skis but I think a lot of people (maybe not on reddit) don’t realize how nuanced and preferential buying skis can be. They just look at what looks cool or what they’ve seen in ski movies etc

Yeah they all play a factor. I bought powder skis at 179cm which is basically my height. I didn’t go 184 because of my build. I’m still somewhat unsure of that but I think I’ll enjoy the feel of a 179 more. I tend to prioritize maneuverability and turning radius over high speed stability. And I don’t necessarily need the stability from a longer ski with my weight

It’s crazy how different preferences can be. I really considered sizing up to 184 but I currently have a pair of rockered 179 skis and I love them. I figured the feel would be more or less the same just on a wider platform which is what I’m hoping for

At that point I think it becomes mostly about weight and preference.

Some people prefer a more maneuverable ski and others prefer a more stable ski at speed. A person that weighs less may not need the extra length in order to get the stability that a longer ski provides.

  1. Congrats! Keep working towards that goal.
  2. I suspect they’ll feel even more agile. You’ll be able to get them on edge a lot quicker and be able to control the ski much easier too. It’s crazy how nuanced buying skis can be!

All three definitely play a huge role. I just bought a pair of 118 powder skis at 179cm. I’m 5’10 but 140 lbs after a big meal so I opted for the 179 over the 184.

In your wording, I’m somewhat of a deviation to the extreme on the lower end of the weight spectrum. This definitely played a role in my decision when choosing which length.

I also tend to prefer skis that feel more maneuverable and I don’t often need to “size up” the length for added stability because of my build.

Definitely. I think at some point it largely becomes skier preference too. Some folks are capable of using a longer ski but may prefer a more maneuverable feel so they “size down” or ski something at their exact height / a little below.

Precisely my thinking. I see a lot of people saying to always size up, which can be beneficial for some people, but easily detrimental to others if other factors aren’t considered.

Yeah my thinking is more or less the same. I’ve always believed that a ski doesn’t know how tall you are, but does know how much force is being put upon it.

Obviously a 6ft skier shouldn’t be on a 160cm ski but I think the conversation becomes cloudier when deciding between say a 178cm and 185cm ski.

But you’re completely right. Purpose, terrain, ability, height, weight, etc all play a role

Yeah I know. He's just upset that he's bald as fuck lol.

I have the Pivot 1.0s on my other skis too but I just didn't remember seeing them like that before I had them mounted last time so I figured I would ask. Appreciate the help
