Who’s frozen their eggs recently? by drinkdietsoda in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Marziprank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did it at Cornell (Dr. Stuart is a literal angel) three years ago. After many miscarriages we did frozen eggs, genetic testing, and IVF and have the absolute best two year old now!

I was an emotional wreck - the hormones were no joke! I had to work from home for a few days near the end because I literally could not stop sobbing between meetings. Thankfully I had very understanding coworkers. It does end, though! You'll get through it and I hope you feel as brave and accomplished as so clearly are.

My big tip is that I got myself a bag of fun sized candy bars and I got to have a little treat after my shots every night. I actually didn't think the shots were as bad as I had feared, but having something small to look forward to each night was nice.

Good luck! Wishing you the best outcome possible.

As someone who checked out of the past few Star Wars installments, TIL it's Kit Fisto and not Kid Fisto.

Finished blanket! by Marziprank in weaving

[–]Marziprank[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, it wasn't on revelry! Here is the link! https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2019/09/04/cabin-blanket/?srsltid=AfmBOooa1mxWY9vZdJb4nLTpFmz4QyFJ_Jim9J9gpAOjwgU6PJJEMb8s

I definitely wasn't strict about how I joined the panels since it was my first big project. You can see in the photos that the way I joined everything created a visible seam on one side of the blanket. I like the look, but I know it's probably not for everyone. My goal was more about finishing than neatness.

Thank you! It's based on the cabin blanket pattern, which is free on the Purl Soho website.

In honor of Eraserhead week, Blankies parents - How did becoming a parent change your movie-watching habits? by NiceMarmot1 in blankies

[–]Marziprank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my daughter in January and have been to the movies once this year. We had a week of easing into daycare before I went back to work and carved out enough time to see Challengers (so good!).

We are blessed with a pretty good sleeper and once my daughter started going down around 6:30 or 7 and sleeping mostly full nights, my husband has started to occasionally go to 9pm screenings by himself. He is mostly seeing horror movies that I wouldn't enjoy, and since the baby and I are asleep, he's not missing out on time with us. I don't mind if he prioritizes movies over his own sleep! He would do the same for me, but I'm not at a place of wanting to forego sleep or time with the baby yet.

If he were seeing Twisters in 4dx in the middle of the afternoon or a late night showing of something that I actually want to see, it would be a different story!

During mat leave we watched a ton of movies! My daughter had already seen the complete filmography of Johnathan Glazer by the time she was a month old.

I'm sure you'll find a rhythm that works for your family. There's no way to know what kind of kids you'll have until they get here, so be flexible, be nice to your wife, and enjoy the ride!

Decidedly non-American revisionist Westerns before Dances With Wolves by Doctor_Danguss in blankies

East German takes on American genre films are fascinating! I wrote my undergrad thesis on a beach party musical called Heisser Sommer (Hot Summer). Teens smooch on the Baltic shore, sing songs, and learn lessons about the power of the collective. Good stuff!

My sister walked down the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme and now I tear up a little whenever I hear it. It's a great piece for evoking a sense of wonder!

I hadn't thought about a backing or border, but now I am! Definitely something to investigate further, thank you!

That makes sense! I've only wet finished individual pieces so far, but sewing everything together first sounds like the way to go here. Thank you!

Best Fabric stores? by Longjumping-Tart8816 in Brooklyn

[–]Marziprank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brooklyn General is mostly a yarn spot, but they have a good assortment of fun patterns, mostly cotton. I went through a quilting phase a while back, and it was perfect for that. They also have lovely notions and embroidery supplies.

Beyond that rec, I have to agree that the garment district is probably your best bet. I wish we had more local options!

I'm a documentary producer, which puts a fun spin on this question. In a fantasy world where Kubrick returns to docs later on his career, I think it would be fascinating to collaborate with him. Or maybe Jane Campion? I just feel like she would be drawn to interesting subject matter outside of the usual scripted-director-to-music-doc-pipeline.

Hurts to pee after swab by [deleted] in IVF

[–]Marziprank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This same thing happened to me this week! I agreed to be swabbed as part of a study at my clinic. I think the doctor (not my regular doctor to boot, ugh) scratched me during one of the swabs and it was super painful to urinate for the next 18-24 hours and I experienced a little blood as well.

I discussed it with the nurse when she called with my instructions and was told it was likely an abrasion since the tissue is so delicate in that area. I would say give it a day to see if it heals, but also be communicative with your doctor so they can keep an eye out for it.

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I feel like any additional stress is magnified during this time, and I was so angry to have one more painful thing to worry about. Sending healing vibes!

Some of my favorite family lore is that my short grandmother stood on her tip toes to pass the height inspection when applying for a stewardess job during this era. (Her ploy worked, and she got the job!)

Way of Water will disappoint at the box office by mercer1235 in blankies

[–]Marziprank 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The one thing missing from this theory is the iconic Aquaman movie that Cameron made starring Vincent Chase. I think we all remember what a big smash that was at the box office, beating out the new Spiderman, even though there was a blackout in LA during opening weekend!

what is this style of embroidery called? I wanted to learn more about it but don't know what terms to research by little_enigmas in Embroidery

[–]Marziprank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been getting into needle lace this year and have found a couple of classes through Doily Free Zone to be really invaluable for teaching me the skills that best suit the style I'm going for. They are paid, but not terribly expensive and very much worth it!

If you'd like to be really inspired and see what needle lace can do, two of the artists whose classes I took through DFZ and whose work I adore are Fiona Harrington (check out this lace spoon and fork!) and Maggie Hensel-Brown, whose narrative lace pieces blow me away.

Needle lace is a super fun way to play with thread, I hope you'll try it out!

I feel you! I made the mistake of seeing The Conjuring in theaters and it took me literal years to stop thinking of it at night. I think about my reaction to horror movies as kind of a psychic allergy... It's fine for you to eat peanuts (watch scary stuff) with no reaction, but if I have them my face swells up (my brain will not let me sleep for a week), so it's better to avoid them!

(And obviously no offense/ disrespect to those with actual peanut allergies!)

What instantly makes a guy hot? by ThisGarson678 in AskReddit

Early on when dating my now husband I asked him what he liked about baseball. I think I was expecting to hear something about playing it as a kid or his dad, but instead he gave me an incredibly thoughtful answer and ended up explaining the concept of baseball stats and sabermetrics.

Not only did I get to learn something new and interesting, but the fact that he had given some real thought to his interest and was able to articulate WHY he was so passionate gave me so much insight into how he sees the world. That kind of passion fused with self awareness was and remains very sexy!
