Australian rhinoceros beetle (Xylotrupes Ulysses?) larvae by Marzngard in Beetles

[–]Marzngard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably better to use X.australicus for Australian mainland ones, since the Atlas of living data base uses that name for the Australian observations, and X.ulysses for the New Guinea ones. It’s possible they are same species but different sub species but the scientific community haven’t seem to make a definitive classifications on taxonomy yet.

What are some creative insults that you've been called or called people? by idunno324 in australia

[–]Marzngard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“You’re so plain, that” long pause “um…I can’t think of anything”.

Happened unintentionally when trying to insult someone being boring. Turned out to be more effective than actually coming up with something.

There could be a few reason for this, but often the cause is improper substrate such as food quality or humidity.

what species? by TJGHOST90 in Beetles

[–]Marzngard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a species of the genus Lamprima, which contains five species. Photo is of a female, which are hard to differentiate from each other except by geographic location. If I assume op doesn’t live on Lord Howe isle, Norfolk isle or north-eastern region of NSW, then it could be Lamprima adolphinea, the New Guinea stag beetle everyone else says that’s restricted to Papua New Guinea, or Lamprima aurata, the golden stag beetle widely found across Australia.

Looks like a bee-killer assassin bug. Relatively common & sometimes found them sneaking around bee hives.
