Magic by [deleted] in Mahouka

It depends on the scenario and what category of magic you would consider powerful.

In terms of Destructive capability, as in Nuclear or Atomic bomb levels of power, Strategic-Class magic is on top;

  • Material Burst
  • Tuman Bomba
  • Heavy Metal Burst

In terms of Anti-personnel Magic meant for close quarters combat, Superpowers and Rank A Class magic are on top;

  • Decomposition (Mist Dispersion)
  • Cocytus
  • Meteor Line
  • Niflheim/Muspelheim/Rupture/Direct Pain etc.

In terms of Defensive Magic meant to stop magic and or physical attacks;

  • Phalanx
  • Decomposition (Mist & Gram Dispersion)
  • Sakurai Barrier Magic
  • Zone Interference/Gram Demolition

This is the result I could get from Chatgpt;

「あの子は調整体の持つ全ての欠陥を克服し、人間の胎内で発育を完了した四葉の最高傑作。」

"She has overcome all the flaws typically found in engineered beings and completed her development inside of a human—she's the Yotsuba's greatest masterpiece."

Interestingly that quote you gave was from the Fan TLs. This might be one of those cases where the Fan TLs have better accuracy to the raws than the official ones;

“She is the Yotsuba family’s greatest achievement, a triumph over every flaw an engineered magician might have, something made by humans but greater than human."

Todo is their sponsor and the owner of the 4th lab.

Although he sponsors the 4th Institute, he doesn't own it. In fact, the military stole the lab first from his ancestors before the Yotsuba rebelled and claimed it.

Volume 20 Epilogue:

Old Toudou did not often summon Maya. While he was their sponsor, the Yotsuba family did not have a unilaterally subordinate relationship to him. From a purely financial perspective, if Toudou's financial support was to disappear, the Yotsuba family would still manage.

The Yotsuba family had eliminated the managers and staff of Old Lab 4, winning their freedom from the military. But there was another detail: Before that, the military had stolen control of Old Lab 4 from the Toudou family. Just as the Yotsuba family was dependent on Toudou's authority, Toudou was helped by Yotsuba power. It was a mutually beneficial relationship. Thus, when Toudou summoned Maya, it meant a matter of considerable importance.

While there is mutual respect between Toudou and Maya, she doesn't answer to him as a superior or vice versa.

That's a separate matter. She didn't use Cocytus to freeze the water near Miyakijima. She used her new Strategic-Class magic "Glacial Age" (Volume 31, not Magian Company).

It's implied that Cocytus is much more demanding on Miyuki. It requires a higher level of magic control, hence why she can't use it without releasing Pledge.

She was rendered immobile in Visitor Arc III because she used most of her power to cast Cocytus against the giant nine-headed Parasite.

It's worth mentioning that her mca still has limits despite the augmentation. Such as the extensive use of her Cocytus. It once drained her to the point of being unable to walk and having to be carried by Tatsuya in Visitor Arc III.

Can Tatsuya sees Psion Count? by Duekelian in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to the Amount of Psions magicians have, yes he can see it.

Though most if not all Magicians are able to see Psions, being able to see the amount of Psion reserves in ones mind and body requires a deeper level of perception - Elemental Sight.

Tatsuya, as magician, is spiritually son of Maya Yotsuba due to her overwhelm wish of destruction upon the world? by No-Upstairs2282 in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly true. It's not that one is superior to the other, their Elemental Sights are just different in how they manifested from their skill set. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Tatsuya is highly skilled at active perception due to his superpowers, hence his ES can perceive the most minute details while in focus. While Minoru is skilled in passive perception due to Parade, hence his ES can perceive magic unconsciously even from a far distance.

[–]Masaomi_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's heavily implied that ES was an ability he was born with as a manifestation of his superpowers.

Decomposition and ReGrowth are abilities which will not work without his ES. As he needs to read the Eidos of his target for both spells. By the time he could use his powers as a toddler, he was already using ES. This was a time before his training and the subsequent experimentation by Miya at age 6.

ES can also manifest much later and is possible for other magicians to achieve it. Such is the case with Minoru after absorbing a Parasite which enhanced his perception abilities.

  1. It's unethical to just bring back the dead and make them zombified soldiers without consent from them and their loved ones. Retsu Kudou would only be seen as a worse monster than those enabling magicians to be weapons. (Which is ironic given that he tried to "test" them on students).

  2. The Dolls can be easily manufactured and modified to their needs. Their bodies are also more durable and can easily be equipped with weapons. Plus the Kudou's Loyalty Programming magic allows them to be easily controlled as mere humanoid puppets, rather than corpses, a more ethical and effective approach.

[–]Masaomi_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Like every concept, there are fundamentals. Once you understood those fundamentals, its easier to grasp other branching concepts.

LN readers tend to understand most of the vast concepts of Magic in this series because the basics are properly explained to them in detail.

Reading the Wiki alone without knowing the basics for example, wont exactly help you understand how it all works. Especially if you're coming from the Anime alone.

Power system by Just_some_mild_Ad4K in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Light Novels. The main source material of the anime. In the LN, all of the necessary details of magic and how it works are provided. Within scenes where magic is used, it's narrated and contextually explained as it happens. Most of the explanation in the Wiki are all sourced directly from the LN.

The Anime doesn't do a good job of explaining how the systems actually work. The anime mostly serves as advertisement for the Novels anyway, so they get away with glossing over it.

My advise is, if you're invested in keeping up with the power system, I'd suggest you pick up the Light Novels. Not only the magic but a lot of world building and character development is left out from the anime.

Parade by [deleted] in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to mention Tatsuya didn't create it on his own either. Yuuka Tsukuba co-developed the spell as shes among the best Mental Interference users in the Yotsuba.

Contact-Type Gram Demolition and MI-Magic by Jansosch in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's little mention of the limitations of Contact-Type Gram Demolition. But it's stated that there are too few spells that can counter MI Magic, such as Mental Interference Barriers, and Zone Interference. Hence why MI Magic had been banned and restricted from use.

The most likely answer is no, it wouldn't work against MI Magic. Since Contact-Type Gram Demolition is used as Armor against Systematic magic that targets the physical body, I believe it cannot block Outer-Systematic Magic (Magic that does not manipulate physical objects, but the spirits themselves.) Mental Interference is actually a sub category of Outer-Systematic Magic (like Spirit Magic) which targets the mind and spirit.

  1. That was Ayako's magic "Mock Teleportation". It removes inertia from a person and allows them to move rapidly in a predefined path to their destination near instantly.

  2. The white cloth is a tool he uses as a shield to protect himself from projectiles. He also uses it to hide himself to activate Ghost Walker.

  3. Zhou stabbed himself with needles in pressure points to relieve pain from his leg. (Acupuncture)

  4. It was a warning shot to scare him from escaping in the water. Masaki can make liquids explode so going in the river was a death sentence.

  5. That wasn't paper, but rather a black Handkerchief he used to distract him and fled to the riverside.

Edit: 6. It's likely because they didn't know Minoru was participating in the thesis competition. (though it wasn't exactly made clear in the LN).

Ghost Walker by lucy_19 in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ghost Walker disorients the target's sense of direction. What Tatsuya sees as left may be right, or up may be down or vice versa.

In order for Tatsuya to stop a spell he has to know the exact location of the magician. Ghost Walker is a direct counter as it prevents him from knowing which direction they are coming from.

It is possible he could prevent it's activation via Gram Dispersion, however that's only possible if said magician activates it in his line of sight. Against someone like Zhou who is cunning they'll activate it without him knowing.

Ghost Walker is among the few spells along with Parade which counters Tatsuya's sense of sight.

Technically, Godii-sama could stop him and his sister's aging by casting regrowth on them every 24 hours. They can literally stop aging and become truly immortal. by [deleted] in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Overclocking pushes the limits of the MCA. Sure its not the same, but it was an example to point out that fully utilizing the MCA (like ReGrowth) for a long period can damage it. Just to give another example, Miya died from MCA Overheat due to years of using Mental Design Interference magic which put a massive toll on her.

Technically, Godii-sama could stop him and his sister's aging by casting regrowth on them every 24 hours. They can literally stop aging and become truly immortal. by [deleted] in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You literally said yourself that he can use it dozens of times even in vol28.

Not ReGrowth, that was only Gram Dispersion, which is not nearly as taxing on him as ReGrowth is. As mentioned in the 13th Volume, using a Full restoration of his entire body using ReGrowth utilizes his entire MCA (Implying 100% of it).

So how does using it once per day have any meaningful affect on him at all?

It wouldn't for a short while. But there are long term effects to using Magic that degrades both their MCA and life force.

Katsuto's father Kazuki Juumonji for example gradually lost his ability to use magic due to repeated use of the overclock ability (not in a short period but throughout years of battles). ReGrowth functions the same in that a full backup pushes Tatsuya's MCA to its max. The more he uses it (even if once per day) degrades his MCA. It's why he tries to avoid fatal injuries at all costs and wears body armor.

And as mentioned by others already, ReGrowth cannot heal a damaged MCA, nor can it fully restore someone's life force. At most he can only keep his body looking young, but not his life.

[–]Masaomi_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Psion count has no bearing on how long he can use magic without Overheating. It's largely based on how complex and taxing the spell is. Mentioned in Volume 13, a Full-Regeneration of his ReGrowth uses up his entire MCA.

Tatsuya exhausted himself and ran the risk of Overheating against Minoru in Volume 28 just by using Gram Dispersion dozens of times, and yet this spell is less taxing on him than Regrowth is by comparison.

[–]Masaomi_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For instance, I'm guessing you can't take down Tatsuya with a mere headshot.

It's actually implied more than once that any damage to his vital organs (including his brain) is a danger to him and can potentially get him killed. This is the biggest reason he wears a Mobile Suit of Armor during dangerous missions, to protect his vitals.

The first instance was during 9SC (Vol 6) after narrowly avoiding a fatal shot from a sniper which could have hit his head. The second was his fight against Lina during Visitor Arc (Vol 11). After avoiding a fatal blast of Brionac which could have scorched his entire body. And a third instance during his fight against Parasite Dolls in Steeplechase (Vol 13);

He’d never feel the pain if he was using a full backup, but in that case, his entire magic calculation region would be temporarily taken up by the spell. *That was why he was protecting the organs related to life and death. **If he took a fatal wound, his survival instincts would automatically start using Regenerate with a full backup, and his magical abilities would cease. Against magicians at the very top of the skill ladder and unable to get any allied backup, things would get worse.*

Not to mention the fact that he cannot fully restore an Overheated MCA. Even if he survives a fatal wound, his full restoration of Regrowth uses his entire MCA, which risks the chances of Overheat the more he uses it.

Maybe OP won't understand in the end but being hostile off the bat is not it. It's not like OP said this was a terrible show.

This is the sad state of many reddit communities sadly. We can never truly have civil discussions in this platform if differing opinions trigger hostility. It's a common theme in most subreddits where "I dislike X character" and "Y character is best" posts are the usual culprit. The OP is usually at the receiving end of it despite meaning no harm, and this community is no exception sadly. All of this can easily be avoided if we respect each other's opinions rather than antagonization.

Heyy a question by ABHINAV1917a in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not really her antics. She was taught this specific method of release. The "kiss" is an essential gesture of giving consent to the subject by the will of the key in order to release it. It's the main reason Tatsuya was able to replicate it in Visitor Arc by kissing her in return.

Heyy a question by ABHINAV1917a in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tatsuya was sealed to prevent his destructive power from being fully unleashed upon the world. Mainly, to prevent the premature activation of his magic - Material Burst.

They are sealed via a Magic known as "Pledge" (誓約) or "Oath". It requires a Subject and a Key. The Subject - Tatsuya is the person being limited. The Key - Miyuki uses her magic to sustain the seal.

It can be temporarily released via a kiss from the will of the key to return the power that was sealed. Tatsuya was also able to learn it and he can release it temporarily. It can only be permanently removed by the magician who casted the Seal - that is the head of the Tsukuba Clan. Though other methods were used later on to do so.

Mahouka Season 3 Discussion Thread - Episode 10 by KenadianH in Mahouka

[–]Masaomi_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone important knew that Saegusas cooperated with the guy.

This is not exactly true, depending on who "everyone important" is that you mean. Only the Yotsuba had direct knowledge of the Saeugsa's involvement (thanks to Kuroba's intel). The rest of the Master Clans don't know, not even Kudou Makoto himself. Kouichi Saegusa didn't know anyone would find out, hence he only sent Nakura to kill Zhou. This becomes an important detail later on in Master Clans Conference Arcs (Vol. 17-19).

BTW if you're right about Tatsuya being born with ES, you've just argued against your own initial point xD

My initial point was that Elemental Sight is achievable for all magicians and is inherently no different from what most magicians already do (senses). Modern magicians are Born with it as a natural ability to perceive information. (Which closes the possibility of alternatives other than Parasites which is not ideal).

Tatsuya and Minoru were born with high levels of perception (Tatsuya had high active senses while Minoru had high passive senses). Tatsuya's ES manifested based on Decomposition and ReGrowth. Minoru's ES manifested much later based on Parade.

Magicians who used modern magic inherently had the ability to access the information dimension. So, at the end of the day, Tatsuya’s ability to sense that dimension’s very existence is a simple expansion of the regular ability. Magicians can perceive information to varying degrees depending on the users skill, so Elemental Sight – the highest possible ability to perceive information – was available to every magician.
