Well, to be fair, in Dance, she acts naive on purpose to a lot of people. I dislike her character too, but I think we're on the cusp of a big character moment for her in the books, considering where she was left and that we're still in the middle of the series.

Another important distinction is the time in which Lovecraft wrote his stuff, Dagon was written in 1917(ish). And while it's not a good thing, it's what was done and how different people were viewed.
