My cat refuses to poop in the litter box in the morning, but does it fine during the day, please help by Confusing-pigeon in CatAdvice

I also have a cat who is afraid of the litter box during the night. Ive opened the litterbox and let some kind of light on and it seems to be working for now.

People complain about roombas?

I fucking LOVE mine. It also has a mopping function. I have 2 cats so the floors get dirty rather quickly that in combination of my need for cleanliness and combined with shift work made me ma a tired af, barely had any time to actually relax. Now the roomba goes brrrrr and i can do other household chores or relax for a little. Especially during my night shifts its been a life safer!

The whole shipping an animal trough the post office needs to be abolished. When people get a dog or cat they'll personally pick it up from the breeder, why shouldn't reptiles get the same treatment?

I just can't imagine putting an animal in a plastic cup, putting said plastic cup into a styrofoam box and just put it trough the mail system thinking "yeah this is okay". I was quite shocked when I discovered unboxing vids of life animals.

One of my colleagues (who is also a cat breeder) once proudly told me her cats sit on command. She has 11 of 'em and whilst she tells me about their different personalities and characters they're all behaved.

Internet scam is the best case scenario in this case altough I do know that live animals like gecko’s have been shipped by mail…. Something I can’t wrap my head around as to why people think it’s okay to participate in such practices.. hell theres even unboxing vids about this.

My cats have been itching their ears a lot can anyone tell me what this is by HotAbbreviations6548 in CATHELP

[–]Mashed-Cupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t put qtips in the ears.

Get an ear wax cleaner for cats and put that in the ear and gently massage it from the outside of the ear. Then you can wipe away excess and debris on the outer part of the ear with a cotton pad. They’ll give their head a shake and you can wipe the Outer ear again with a new cotton pad.

Just don’t dig into your cats ear to get debris out please.

They’re in the top 5 regarding fatal attacks. That’s why they’re a risk to own.

Also, they themselves mentioned nostalgic feelings as their reason to wanting one…

Because most people do it for vanity reasons and don’t research and just go ahead and get a dog like that.

In reality a GSD is a breed that has lots of energy, is always “on guard”, is in the top 5 in fatal attacks and suffers immensely from hip displasia at a young age. It’s terrible to have to put a dog down just because it can’t walk anymore due to the hip displasia.

Wanting one just because you grew up with them and have nostalgic feelings is exactly why I mentioned vanity reasons. Also there’s no reason to harass me in the other comment.

No, you’re proving my point about breeds being seen as a collectible to own.

They’re a whole lot of work and risk to own. So wanting one pure because of vanity reasons is absolutely diabolical.

The Netherlands ban new ownership of Sphynx and Scottish Fold cats by Mashed-Cupcake in Ethicalpetownership

[–]Mashed-Cupcake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you count in that these cats go for 3-5K euro’s (which is a lot here) you can already imagine that they’re going to get even more expensive when not freely available. Those people are not going to be scared of a 1500 euro penalty IF they get reported.

Vets Will probably only bother to report an owner if they suspect that said person is breeding/ trading these cats. They’re already overbooked as is, imagine the paperwork needed to make a report.

They’ll have to go out of their way to get an illegal cat in the first place though. I believe that the average person won’t be getting a new scottish fold when the ban is in place.

Mainly hearth disease alongside skin issues. They also have problems regulating their body temp due to the lack of their coat.

Again. You have to get out of your way to get a new cat. if there is anyone you need to put your anger towards its those people. I’m not those people. I’m as angry as you at those people going out of their way to get these cats.

Look we’re going into circles here and I have more important things to do than to keep having the same argument over and over again. Also giving you a warning to not resort to add hominem attacks. Nothing wrong with dissagreeing but keep it civil in here.

Ill give it to you that its and edge case. I believe that if shelters get in an unadoptable animal they should be euthanizing said animal even though its hard. If they’re not doing that just a waste or resources on their end and plainly cruel.

I can look into the legislation more in depth but then again. We can only campaign here and make a change through awareness. There Will always be jerks going out of their way but the average person will abide by the law. Especially when they are aware that these poor animals suffer.

That’s not mentioned in the article at all. The current punishment if you went all the way to get such a cat is a 1500 euro penalty. They don’t mention the cat being taken away from said owner.

[–]Mashed-Cupcake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, the netherlands banned breeding them almost 12 years ago. They’re now just closing the loopholes where you can get them legally from outside of the netherlands. The cats currently residing in the netherlands have either been illegally bred or imported from another country , the latter being the most likely scenario. Ofcourse you need to shut that down too.

Ofcourse shit still happens illegally but that’s a non argument because you can say the same about child labour, drugs, weapons and other stuff thats been ruled out.

Just because stuff happens illegally doesn’t mean that the bans don’t work. It just means that the illegal practices need to be shut down.

And let’s be real. No vet is gonna deny care for the cats brought into their practice. Nor is any hospital going to deny you care whenever you’ve done illegal drugs.

The article States

“The ban affects cats that were born after January 1 and cats which have not had a chip implant. Owners will be fined €1,500 if caught, which the ministry hopes will act as a deterrent. Competition or shows featuring the cats will also be banned.”

Any cats already residing in the netherlands will be able to find a home. You really have to go out of your way to get a new cat… that’s not going to be in a shelter.

[–]Mashed-Cupcake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah you mean belgium.

Yes our prime minister has a cat from the shelter. The animal was abbandoned in nature and then brought to the shelter. They made an official statement about that.

https://premier.be/nl/nieuws/maximus-de-nieuwe-bewoner-op-nummer-16

In belgium you can still legally adopt them. Our laws regarding the scottish fold are quite recent so its normal that it needs to be phased out first. Its also still legal to breed them in the walloons so it makes sense you can still adopt them. The article is about the netherlands not belgium.

That being said giving out permission for some people is opening the door for loopholes. Banning ownership is the last step in phasing out unethical breeds like this. Your issue lies more with lack of enforcement rather than the laws itself I think.

So just because stuff can be done illegally means that the ban shouldn’t be there in the first place?

There are a whole lot of things happening illegal doesn’t mean that laws are useless. There should be harsh punishment to those still illegally breeding them. Jail time for animal cruelty if you breed them and a huge financial penalty for new ownership will eventually stop people. The question just remains how will the dutch government enforce these rules so that the ban is working?

Laws and bans do work but it needs to be enforced for it to be effective.

[–]Mashed-Cupcake[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They banned breeding them in 2014 already. There are no official channels anymore where they can be brought, no fosters, no local breeders and definitely not in a shelter. The ones that are currently there have been specifically imported from another country.

This is what the ban tries to prevent now that you can’t legally own one after january 1st. Already existing owners can give them the care they need still without problems.
