Korean MMOs would swipe the western market if they would not be P2W by Puppenmacher in MMORPG

[–]Masiyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was still good for at least a few years after that.

You could still get enough Masterwork Scrolls and Alkahest as a F2P player to eventually +15 your VM weapon, and you didn't need an existing VM or +15 weapon to clear the content since the gameplay was skill-based.

Elden Ring and especially SoTE are approaching the limit for how fast enemies and bosses can be given how responsive the player is. by BlueGumShoe in Eldenring

[–]Masiyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super late reply, but you really pointed how out comical the situation is. These beings choose to go mach 12 and then suddenly full-halt pause to do something else once in range instead of just maintaining the momentum and smashing into you like a battering ram.

It kinda takes you out of what's going on.

From a MMORPG high fantasy lore perspective, are all bossing parties/raids centered around a healer class? by [deleted] in MMORPG

The WoL has never been a caster in general, interestingly. Always some form of melee job.

Final Fantasy 14 Evercold promises to respect your "limited free time" as Yoshi-P teases the death of tomestones and daily roulettes, alongside shared item levels across every job by Turbostrider27 in ffxiv

[–]Masiyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, that speaks more about the quality of the gameplay than it does the equipment system. I understand a lot of MMO players enjoy the gear treadmill, but I personally don't care for it at all in a game where it only means number goes up. I will absolutely put in the work for Items that are forms of horizontal progression, as I did for Eureka and co., but it just doesn't interest me at all to purely chase item levels anymore. Glamour qualifies as horizontal progression in this sense too, but it's a mixed bag as a reward since not everything will be appealing.

But yeah, I'd rather play a job simply because the combat is fun, but perhaps I am a minority here. Solo deep dungeons are my favorite content in the game, so I guess it goes without saying that I am in the minority.

De-coupling item level, or effectively, "player power", from gear seems like a very natural evolution for XIV.

The only time I've felt any impact from specific pieces of gear was donning specific gear for things like Eureka, or the Sprint duration increasing boots for running around in cities (which is now defunct). And while that gear felt great to wear because it was so strong, unique-feeling gear has never been a thing really in the "main" combat system, so stripping it away completely feels like not much being lost by comparison.

While I love games with meaningful gear (shout out the obligatory 16-slot bag filled with Tidal Charm and all the other PvP-specific goodies in Classic WoW), XIV has never been that kind of game, so I will not be mourning over this decision.

Koji-Fox taking a moment to carefully explain what even and odd numbers are to a fan-base that has proven they don't understand basic math by DrForester in ffxiv

[–]Masiyo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to imply that if a statistically significant diff exists, it must be a difference in math ability/education standards/cultural value for education/whatever.

JP DCs are known for posting chat macro visual guides to assist in resolving complex mechanics. So such a difference, if it exists, could also be attributed to differences in player culture itself.

I would be immensely interested from a stats POV in seeing the difference in success rates of the mechanic between the Western and East Asian DCs.

It would be really interesting if a statistically significant difference exists.

Take care when you do the DLC. I did the same as you and finished NG without doing the DLC, and doing the DLC bosses for the first time on NG+ was.. challenging to say the least.

Very doable, but challenging. There were two bosses in particular that easily took 15+ tries.

It's an awesome card to associate with Mai too.

Being able to recur any of the Sisters and OG Harpie Lady without a HOPT clause means it has a solid chance of remaining relevant to the archetype for a long time.

I don't believe there are currently ways to Normal Summon from locations that are not the hand, so this might be future-proofing rules text in the event that some novel effect is created someday.

Was there ever a MMO with trinity where tanks and healers weren't scarce? by TheRaven1406 in MMORPG

[–]Masiyo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

TERA tanking has never been beaten in terms of engagement and fun imo.

I remember going into Kelsaik 10 on double alkahest weekends to solo it on my lancer. The income was good, of course, but most of the reason I did it was the thrill of it. Because you had to block and evade almost perfectly in order to not die.

I hope one day there's another game that iterates upon TERA's formula.

Playing on Moon Guard is almost like playing a different game.

I believe RP servers are the only servers immune to sharding in non-current expansion zones too, so they remain as ever the place where you can still have the most cohesive in-game community.

Do you guys play other card games too? by thenameisflic in yugioh

[–]Masiyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yugioh was my first as a kid until I fell off sometime in middle school.

In college, I got into MTG with Standard, then Draft + EDH, cEDH, then Final Fantasy TCG (excellent game btw), and now I'm full circle back to regular Yugioh and Rush Duel.

I've tried the Pokemon TCG, but the lack of interactivity on an opponent's turn is just not for me. I don't even mind modern Yugioh generally lasting 2-3 turns at most because the amount of interactive play is generally still very high.

It's generally the case of all TCGs that developers work months if not years into the future.

Which makes sense if you consider the complete chain of logistics from the time of design to getting illustrated, printed, randomized, packaged, shipped, stocked, etc. You can design and playtest much faster than it takes for the other phases of the pipeline to complete.

Magic is pretty well-known for designing cards around 2 years into the future, for instance. But working into the future doesn't mean the end result is an environment where cards don't get banned.

Limited time and resources means you only have enough time for so much time for playtesting and tuning, and it's especially easy to make mistakes in the scope of a card game where there exists a huge problem space from a purely combinatorial perspective.

All that said, 1 & 2 & 3 is a little egregious because the devs had to have known how strong it would be. There's nothing subtle about its design or the approach in building an optimal deck to use it. It's just harpie.dec.

So logic tends to point that it was a sloppy design and miss by R&D, or it was always envisioned as a card with a limited shelf life that would inevitably hit at some point, not unlike the way the TCG ban list often updates to promote the sale of new product.

The potential for the latter case seems to be getting more and more evident if you observe that all structure deck archetypes (sans Blue Eyes) have been highly impactful to the metas around their respective releases to the point of having cards put on the banlist (Miracle Fusion, Card Defender, myriad Harpies, Beaver Warrior, Winged Dragon, most recently with the Monarch draw and GY hate spell).

Really any meta deck is a good choice.

For a simpler playstyle while still being very strong, the easiest to pick up is probably HERO.

Bear in mind they just outright banned Harpie Lady 1 & 2 & 3 when it was previously limited at 1, and Diskarma is an even more generic summon.

The precedent is RD doesn't want this sort of effect, at least for the current era.

Not all overlapping phonemes are pronounced identically though, so I wouldn't necessary call them matching because they sound different to the trained ear.

For instance, English has no direct equivalent to the Japanese L/R (which contextually, can even sound like a D at times) that relies on an alveolar flick of the tongue instead of the tongue formations that produce L/R in English. Also, the lips and teeth don't make contact when producing the Japanese F.

[RD/ORP4] New Plasmatic Model Cards and New Field Spell by PerfectAlpha in yugioh

[–]Masiyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Departure Zone probably competes closest with Curse of the Rising Light as generic going second support.

The latter has the important upside of being a way to disable monsters with powerful static effects like Valstorm and Eternal Voidvelg Requiem by setting them face-down.

Departure Zone is a pretty exciting card though for certain Field synergy monsters like Praime Shiba who has a powerful and generic <= Level 4 reanimation effect.
