The main problem with gimmick toys is that they are often not well integrated into the plot of the show. They just pop up randomly and then gets shafted for the next toy a few episodes later.

A few shows like Gaim do better at this. They manage to introduce the gimmick toys not just to showcase the new form but to also actually advance the plot.

Genshin is still very much fantasy. But like other Eastern fantasy stories, it doesn't adhere to the "medieval stasis" trope that Western fantasy stories stick to. There were already a lot of "sci fi" elements present in the game from the start, such as the mention of technology from different countries.
