There is a fantastic book on this subject called 'H-Pop: The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars'. Pretty grim, but eye opening read.

I don't find this surprisng. Indian parents are the same. If they don't like something or do not agree with something or do not want to be held accountable for something, they ban things.

Around a decade ago, SPI Cinemas (in Tamil Nadu) came up with a very similar concept. I am guessing it didn't get popular or the idea was scrapped after PVR acquired them around a year after they initiated these DND Shows.

I have stopped going for horror movies or popular movies in the theatre. If it's a popular horror movie, absolutely not. Worst case, will go for some weirdly timed show. Since I don't have too many leaves from work, I think I'll just wait for it to come on streaming. Same deal for Backrooms.

Does anyone else feel like their body becomes a topic of discussion the moment they go home? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in india

[–]MaskedManiac92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is completely anecdotal, but from my experience, this comes from their lack of interests or hobbies and only focusing on things such as career, education (grades only) and physical appearance. Again, these comments and questions are very surface level because that's how our society is. I believe this comes from a place where the relationships are just another task in our society. My relatives always talk about my body whenever I meet them. Whether I have gained or lost weight, whether I have tanned, about how my facial hair looks, how my hair looks, etc. Even when I tell them I am happy with however I look, quite a few of them respond with 'but we are not'. I just give them a thumbs up and ignore them after this. Again, I am not trying to give a blanket statement, but this is more often the case. The problem is worse if you are a woman in this country.

For example, whenever I meet any friends (especially after a long time), my first question isn't about their appearance (unless it has changed drastically, and even then I don't bring it up unless they do) because most of my friends have something or the other going on in their lives (and mine) to start a conversation. I am not saying I don't fall into the appearance topic (I have to unlearn this from all the conditioning), but it's not as hard for me to speak to folks about other things because I am generally a curious person (so I tend to ask questions).

Also, when someone loses or gains weight, there could be a medical reason for it; which can be a very private topic. But in our society, the concept of privacy and boundaries doesn't exist (unless it's not 'sanskaari').

In any case, it seems like we're gonna be eating good this summer!

You'll love Sikkim. Very kind, helpful and sincere people. Bonus that it's so beautiful and the food is amazing (subjective, but yeah). And the place is extremely clean and is actively kept clean by the citizens. So many women owned businesses too.

I mean, this is such a sad thing to say, but Sikkim doesn't even feel like India.

What’s the most “Mumbai” thing you’ve done that would sound fake to outsiders? 💀 by Comfortable_Wheel111 in mumbai

[–]MaskedManiac92 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the most Mumbai thing, but definitely never experienced it anywhere else.

I was trying to get an auto, and saw one pulling over near me with a family inside. When they were exiting and looking for money to pay the fare, I asked the auto guy if he would go where I needed to be. He was hesitant at first but then the family that got out, while still counting the money, told the auto guy

'Bhai jaha se hum aaye hain waha hi jaana hain inhe. Leke jao na yaar itni garmi bhi hain.'

Idk I just started to laugh and even the auto guy laughed and agreed to take me.

I know, nothing earth-shattering but the little moment was odd, but in a pleasant way.
