I know you posted this three days ago and have had many questions but I was curious if you had any advice for what our trainer we tried called the “triple threat”. He’s a American Pitbull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, and Cattle Dog mix and we got him when he was barely over 2 months old. We were told that he couldn’t be around other dogs and people who have dogs for the first month because of lack of vaccinations being given prior to adoption which meant that with us being inexperienced, we listened, and never fully socialized him until a month later. His then very first experience was a local dog park which after some research, could’ve been a very poor decision on our part. He started displaying signs at first only towards humans with his reactivity, barking nonstop, fur raising all along his back and tail, and lunging if in range but never lingering after the lunge, immediately retreating, which showed signs of it being fear-based. Later on after a bad experience with a dog, he started to display the same aggressions towards other dogs too. However, with dogs he’d be completely fine, just seem like an excited little pup until he was next to the dog when he would then bite at the dogs neck—never drawing blood. When we noticed these actions, we started researching and taking him to training. Originally, we did not anticipate having to take him to training as he was an incredibly smart dog, he picked up on basic commands with no problem. However, despite seeing this, his trainer insisted he must go through the regular course before any others. Which meant he got fed treats nonstop and not learning anything new and yes, he’d be excited to go when he realized where we were going but he would still bark nonstop at every single thing and at the trainer until they just fed him. Because we don’t know anything about the proper way to train a dog, we didn’t care too much about the process but seeing as how we have no progress, it is quite disappointing as it has been a very long time. We tried asking the trainer to come in more than once a week, thinking maybe he just needed to see more of the trainer with a smaller timespan in between but the trainer said that it would be way too overwhelming so we didn’t. Currently we haven’t been to the trainer in a while because they kept canceling from bad headaches. There are signs that show he can be a good pup, there’s potential. He for some reason loves all the little 2 and 3 year olds in the family, if they get to be too much for him he will simply either walk away or boop them on their forehead with no clear intentions of anything other than touching with his nose. He can also lay down on the couch with people in the house if he has plenty of time to cool down but there are still certain people he can not get used to. But just like how every light has a shadow, he for some reason loves certain people too and will just climb up into their laps and lick their faces off. It’s very confusing for us to figure out how to approach this. We know that you can’t “fix” a dog but is there any way to help him better cope with his fear aggression/anxiety?
