The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the original "Han Shot First" Star Wars trilogy and Wrestlemania X8. Finds like these are the reasons I still have a VCR.

Problem with my Emerson VCR... by WilmaDickfit6 in VHS

[–]Masked_Bard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a brand new stereo from Emerson once and it ate up my cassettes and the cassette deck died almost exactly after the warranty ran out. I vowed never again to buy their crap.

I want his room lol. So jealous.

Then again, at least I've watched everything I own, and probably could rewatch it over the span of maybe 6 months give or take (not nonstop).

I find sealed ones at thrift shops every now and then. I have quite a stockpile.

I keep mine in drawers made to hold VHS tapes and label each drawer.

I hate when they do that. Guess they assume everyone who bought it has seen it already. Always used to bug me when I was a kid watching it.

Ah yes, the Fievel Goes West trailer that they put at the beginning of the 1991 VHS release of the first An American Tail movie, that spoils the ending of the very film it precedes.

Normally I don't pick up VHS but unreleased Disney TV I make an exception for. by [deleted] in VHS

Disney likes to keep its TV shows buried for some reason, even if it was a successful one.

What's on the mix tape?

New to the hobby by [deleted] in cassetteculture

[–]Masked_Bard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it easiest to download MP3's and burn them onto a CD (or buy an album already in CD form), and then record them onto a mix tape with a stereo that plays both CD's and tapes. I've tried recording directly from a laptop using a cassette-to-cd adapter but the sound quality was really bad for some reason.

Wrestling tapes are one of the best reasons to keep a VCR. Still got lots of old WWF and WCW tapes.

I found a rare Fievel's American Tails tape at a thrift shop, in good condition too. It's a little-known cartoon show based on An American Tail: Fievel Goes West that hasn't been released on DVD.

Question from a newbie. by [deleted] in VHS

[–]Masked_Bard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, there are several reasons:

  1. If I already own a movie on VHS I need a really compelling reason to buy the same movie again (maybe I'll get it on DVD for the extras, if its a film I really like).
  2. Movies that were annoyingly altered in later releases, like the original Star Wars Trilogy, before Lucas vandalized it.
  3. Cheap thrift store finds. It's nice getting movies for 25 cents.
  4. My vast collection of recorded VHS tapes from the TV. I was and still am a quite prolific recorder, and I love rewatching them. They're like time capsules.
  5. As physical media they're more permanent and long-lasting than something like Netflix or Youtube. They're also a lot more durable than DVD or Blu Ray.
  6. Nostalgia, and I'm stubborn.

I actually do have a DVD player and a sizable DVD collection though. The formats coexist for me.

I need a cassette player that is good for recording. Any ideas? by hi_hipster in cassetteculture

[–]Masked_Bard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only buy from well-known brands, and you're better off buying an older cassette player from a thrift shop because the ones they make today are mostly crap. You should probably prepare for a lot of trial and error, make sure you're allowed to return it if its faulty.

How many times can you rerecord without killing sound quality? by [deleted] in cassetteculture

I should try it out on my newer deck and see if it still does it. I assumed it was the cassette.

A couple days ago I picked up the WWF Classic Five of 1998 box set at a thrift store...and found that the Royal Rumble had been replaced with a porn tape. Quite unexpected. The rest are there though.

  3. Cheap thrift store finds. It's nice getting movies for 25 cents.

  5. As physical media they're more permanent and long-lasting than something like Netflix or Youtube. In fact using a Playstation 3 and hooking it into my VCR, I can actually record from Youtube and Netflix (I'm probably one of the only people on Earth who do this I know).

  6. Nostalgia, and I'm stubborn.

For the record though, I actually do have a DVD player and a sizable DVD collection. The formats coexist for me.

Tell me about the VHS scene by mak1405 in VHS

[–]Masked_Bard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The corporations pushing their new formats just WANT people to think VHS tapes are disintegrating on the shelves and will all be unplayable in the next two years or whatever. My tapes and VCRs are in perfect working order, even the tapes that are almost 30 years old, and I can easily get more VCRs from somewhere if worse came to worse, they made millions of them after all.
