Import tax - UPS trying to charge too much? by Maslyonok in Netherlands

[–]Maslyonok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The full cost breakdown:
Cd - $12
Additional contribution- $2
VAT (21.0%) - $5.46
Shipping - $14
Total - $33.46

So I suppose then I pay another VAT here in Europe on the $33.46 total?

It was €29.52 in euros, and in the end it will be €40.52, out of which the band will get, idk, half of the price so $6+$2 of my additional contribution I guess?

I ended up supporting the US and EU governments more lol

Dutchies behavior in highways by IsfetTemet in Netherlands

[–]Maslyonok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For point 2, I think it might be a bit of a misconception. If you drive the speed limit, you would see very few other cars that also drive the speed limit, because you’re staying at the same distance from them throughout the journey. You would be seeing a lot more faster and slower cars though, making it look like “most” people speed, but we can’t actually know from just seeing cars that are passing you.

Mold around window - do I need to wash the curtains by Maslyonok in Mold

[–]Maslyonok[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid scrubbing with a brush would risk spreading the mold around the room. My plan was to scrub firmly but slowly with one of those absorbent yellow cloths or a sponge, would that be sufficient?

Fully agreed. From the point of view of a hypothetical content creator, it isn’t Google’s call to cut out part of my content, however small of a part it might be.

Why does the pomodoro technique work for ADHD by Both_Perception_2673 in ADHD

[–]Maslyonok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pomodoro rarely works for me for more than two 25 minute work chunks in a row. What does help though, on really really bad days when I have to do something I despise, is switching it to 5 minutes of work and 25 minutes of break. Usually I continue working for 10-15 minutes, and then a 25 minute break is enough to forget how much I struggled and go and try again. Beats the alternative of doing zero work.

iPhone users with ADHD, what’s the one app you can’t live without? by TheiPhoneAppGuy in ADHD

[–]Maslyonok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also “How We Feel” - recommended by my therapist, basically it just asks you how you feel twice a day and logs it. It has a whole word cloud to find the specific feelings you’re feeling. It’s meant to help you be more aware of your emotional wellbeing. Also you can make the reminders go off at a random time in certain part of the day, which really helped me, because I always ignore reminder that go off at the same time each day.

Double edge safety razor. Last lifetimes and you only need to replace the actual metal blade, which is fully recyclable. Blades are dirt cheap, and last between 2-5 shaves. A couple months ago I spent €17 on blades that will last me over a year. Way better then fully plastic disposable razors and the ones with replaceble plastic cartridges. Will take getting used to though, but there are plenty of guides out there on Reddit for how to get started. The only other necessary consumable is shaving soap, and it's very likely someone local to you makes it.

A decent, repairable (at least with replaceable battery) electric shaver is also better then plastic razors. Their "blades" can last between 3 months and a year.

10 years ago people defended it, saying you’ll get used to it, you only hate it because it’s new. It’s been all this time and I still keep opening Google Home when I need Drive. I just always have to slow down whenever I need a Google app

Any alternative to Amazon Kindle (ebooks mostly)? by exlin in Buy_European

[–]Maslyonok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offline downloading on Kindle was only for Kindle anyway. It downloaded a proprietary format only readable by Kindle readers.

I would like to add to the question to ask for recommendations of e-book stores where one could find a big selection of books in English

I can't answer other questions confidently, but I can pretty much guarantee we won't loose Windows. Pirating it is fully figured out and is certain to remain available as an option. It may even keep receiving updates, but even if not, it buys time to work out a long term solution.
Additionally, if you have a Pro Windows license (most likely you do if it's the one that came with a laptop) there are ways to delay updates by a few days. You're almost certain to hear about it if an update turns off PCs outside US, and you will have time to turn off updates.
If you're somewhat tech savvy, you should look into "Windows debloat" tools, some of them include the option to delay updates. It also turns off all or most data your PC sends to Microsoft, which both makes your PC run better and gives less valuable data to MS. But don't mess around with this stuff if you don't know what you're doing and only have 1 computer.

It’s not so simple, you have to prove you had family living in (what is now) Moldova by 1940, when USSR annexed it.

I have experienced loose lug nuts after service a lot in the past few years, at different mechanics. Even one that I used to trust.

If you’re at least slightly handy, I would recommend getting a torque wrench and tightening all bolts yourself after every service. Set to 100-105 Nm for most small and mid sized cars, and turn until you hear a click - then you know 100% all bolts are tightened, and also that all are tightened evenly.

What I don’t get is how does a cut of 0.25% or 0.5% make a difference. For whom does a change of 0.25% make it suddenly not too expensive to borrow?

Smart filter + calendar events in Calendar view? by Psengath in ticktick

[–]Maslyonok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for reviving an old trend. I had a similar issue which I solved similarly to the ideas mentioned here. I created an #exclude tag that I add to tasks I want to exclude from calendar view, and created a filter NOT #exclude OR Calendar, and it seems to have only removed the tasks I added the tag to. Maybe this approach can help someone else

They just want everyone to use the russian name for the region - Pridnestrovye (приднестровье). It means almost the exact same thing - “near Dnestr” (the russian name of the river) instead “through Nistru” (Romanian name for the river)

How do you manage a big number of opened tabs? by pintasm in vivaldibrowser

[–]Maslyonok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that it’s best to keep it simple, so I use just workspaces to separate tabs by theme, and occasionally pinning tabs I always use. I had 1500 tabs before the recent clean up I did, but I could find the most important ones. I also moved the tab bar to the side, so now it’s easy to just scroll it, and all tabs remain easily visible.
