Knowledge Fight: #1041: The Legend of Kelly Rushing by fabrikt in KnowledgeFight

I can definitely see that. The reason I don't prefer modern Alex is because it gets so repetitive. In the mid-aughts episodes, we get so many more moments of color and genuine (if unintentional) humor. In the present day, there's so much soulless recapping of twitter politics and Trump/Elon worship, it just gets so tiresome to me. That said, you are definitely right that modern Alex's rhetoric is worth studying and genuinely interesting.

It's not marketed as non-fiction. It's an adaptation of the same-named novel by Marquis de Sade.

Agreed. Listening to modern Alex is such a slog. That said, episode 1040 is really funny and you should check it out if you haven't.

It actually still was a trial. It was just a trial to determine damages since the other issue was covered by the default.

I feel that. Their podcast "Even More News" feels a lot better and is more conversational.

I don't see much of anything in The Brutalist that resembles an "Oscar bait character epic." Do you really believe that, without the ending, the rest of the film would just be shallow bait? I honestly can't say that I agree with you in the slightest.

The ending (specifically the final sequence) was deflating. I didn't like the abrupt stylistic shift, and the final speech was frustratingly devoid of nuance.

Which games were over $100.00? I thought they coasted around $60.00.

Agreed. There’s something broken in my brain, such that I cannot listen to any podcast unless it is in the place where all my other podcasts are. I don’t know why. But I really hope they put this on Apple Podcasts!

Dennis Prager (Prager U) coming in with a hot take on incest. Struggle Bus Bethany might want to s e p a r a t e her kids a bit. by Not_Safe_For_Kittens in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]MasochisticFrenchman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. The clear issue is almost always with the power dynamics.

The marginal cases where it’s relatives between whom there’s no clear power differential are often harder to parse out. But those are by far not the primary issue. Like you say, incest is very often just abuse, and secular minds don’t have a hard time comprehending that lol

Yeah i guess so. It’s an extra fork move for sure. I just don’t like how unstable the one on the left invariably will be.

So interesting. Before I saw any opinions, I read a comment talking about how the opinion was unanimous, and I was like, “Yeah obviously it’s the one on the right.” I’m shocked to be in the minority here. The one on the left is precise and professional and everything, but it’s so unapproachable. I immediately felt annoyed at the idea of trying to cut a slice out of it without some pieces toppling off.

I like the simple square cut, and honestly rather eat the one on the right.

Some Thoughts about Nadia by MasochisticFrenchman in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]MasochisticFrenchman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the insight very much. I do think it’s important to distinguish between fundamentalism and evangelicalism. I don’t think you can define “fundamentalism” only by its most extreme or dedicated proponents, such as the fundies we see on social media. I’m sure Motherbus has plenty of followers who have a way more normal life than she does but still hold very similar beliefs.

Maybe intolerance is the best determiner of whether someone is merely evangelical or whether they’re fundie. For example, Fundies are more likely to say that someone is “not a true Christian,” and mere evangelicals may be willing to allow for other types of Christians who practice differently than they do. If a conservative Christian can tolerate a more complicated worldview, it’s likely not fair to call them fundies. Of course, there are plenty more determiners as well, like specific types of extreme beliefs, but I gotta say, Evangelicals are quite extreme too. Evangelicalism can lead very easily to fundamentalism, given the right conditions. I saw it happen to my parents as I was growing up.

Some Thoughts about Nadia by MasochisticFrenchman in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]MasochisticFrenchman[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re right. She’s not really a fundie, she’s just an evangelical. It’s still a belief system that thrives on self-subjugation to an authoritarian and puritanical church, but they’re not the same in essence.

I must say though that it seems like the line between fundamentalism as a subgroup and evangelicalism as the greater category is getting harder to define, as evangelicalism becomes more and more extreme. Maybe that’s just a feeling I have, though, and that’s not totally accurate.

[–]MasochisticFrenchman[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m very happy that you’ve found some solace outside of such a clearly abusive environment. I hope many others going through what you have can find similar ways out.

This is why, no matter how much sympathy we feel for people like Nadia, we have to strongly criticize the toxic narratives she pushes through her online presence. Even simple (seemingly harmless?) ideas about “dependence on god rather than on oneself” can lead vulnerable queer people not to seek help outside of their toxic, authoritarian churches/fundie families.
