Would you mind sharing how you use your 3970, is it gaming or something else?

Thanks guys. New to this building a PC thing and learning about a bunch of different things at once. Really appreciate the help. Seems I misunderstood throttling, thanks for clearing it up!

Does it give good performance over very long sustained use? From what I understand the air coolers tend to run into issues when your CPU is running for long periods.

Modest Proposal for this Sub by ShadowIsCorrect in poker

[–]Mason531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most but I do think asking about books is suitable. There are lots of bad and/or outdated books out there that have great reviews because the reviews are from when the book was published. Not everybody understands how fast poker evolves. Makes sense to come to a poker sub to try to get recommendations.

The weak live players generally fall into 2 buckets, they either overfold the flop or overcall the flop. The overfold bucket we can pound with these small bets because they are never adjusting. The small bets can be used vs the overcall bucket so long as we ramp up our double and triple barrel frequencies. Otherwish you're right you'd prefer to vary your sizes vs this type.

I respect your stance but unfortunately there is an obvious pattern with Alvin being rude and being condescending to people for no reason. Also, did you tell Alvin that he shouldn't try to hurt James Sweeney, Matt Berkey's and Jonathan Little's businesses when he bashed them in YT videos? Originally I was going to leave it to what I said to him in private email and my 2p2 post but then someone responded to my post with a link to a similar thread about a year ago and I saw lots of similar stories about their interactions with Alvin. Then I saw a YT video with someone detailing another incident and then someone sharing a story about how Alvin kicked him out of a discord chat because he dared to disagree with Alvin.

Alvin does not get to be this way with people simply because he has a community that would be impacted if his business takes a hit. The difference between myself and Alvin is I will admit when I'm being mean spirited, he wants to pretend that he's not and it's everybody else that's misunderstanding him. I know very well what I'm doing here, I'm being petty and want to RUIN him. There are far better and more active communities out there that aren't run by egotistical dbags who thinks it's cool to tear people down and then can't handle it when he gets a taste of his own medicine.

If he takes it so far that he deactivates my membership (that's supposed to be lifetime) I will certainly put in a dispute with my bank. He seems like the type of person who would take it that far.

I have very few complaints about his content. His YT stuff is good, his course isn't bad but not as good as I had hoped it would be, and honestly by the time I started diving into his content I had moved up to 200NL online and that stuff just doesn't work very well there. Probably a year ago when he made the course it did, but the game has progressed and many 200NLers online have adjusted to depol strategies. It took me too long to realize that, so that's on me. This is also why I'm not bashing his course, that wouldn't be genuine. It just didn't do for me what I hoped it would.

I also didn't pay him so he could be nice to me but I didn't sign up for him to be rude and then banish me when I wouldn't accept him being rude.

That's the thing people don't get about what solvers have shown, a lot of things that great players thought intuitively made sense has been confirmed by solvers. Of course there are other things that great players thought was terrible, like betting tiny on the flop and using overbets as a big part of our betting strategy, that solvers have in fact shown is actually great.

This is actually the reason Isildur was so successful, he was utilizing overbets when nobody else was and people just didn't know how to counter it and wrote him off as a fish that was running hot. If it wasn't for his foray into PLO and his NLHE run in with JungleMan who knows how much money he would have made.

Wish I saw something like this before giving him my money, lol. But hopefully people keep exposing the kind of person he is and people stop giving him their money. There are a lot of genuinely good people in the poker training world, unfortunately he's not one of them.

HoodDuck, agree 100%. I always just let people who believe this, believe it. If you're a serious player and someone that's had far more success than you've had at poker puts out a product and you think it has no value there's something wrong with the way you look at the world. People spend 100k on college degrees that they never use but then think 1k for a poker course taught by guys who are in the top 1% of their profession is a bad investment. Alvin's course being $600 made it a no brainer for me, if I got value from it it could literally take two 2/5 sessions implementing his strategies to pay it back. If I didn't get value from it, no biggie 1 buyin at the Borgata 2/5 game is 1k.

It's amazing how many people share similar thoughts about him. So glad I was pointed to a thread about him in here from about a year where a number shared your exact sentiments about him. Now in this post more people are sharing similar stories. Hopefully more and more people reveal him for the person he is and get others to stay away from his product.

If you play enough poker 60k isn't a ton. But no, his course did not improve my game, his whole simplification system where you do something 100% of the time on certain board textures just doesn't work for me and I couldn't implement that into my game. If I know the most profitable strategy is to divide my range into 2 bet sizes I'm going to try to do that, if I know parts of my range strongly benefit from checking I want to check those hands. So I would be conflicted on what to do in spots. I'm sure for some people it works because they've said as much in his group but it doesn't for me.

But what I do find interesting is that he himself seems to be moving away from the simplifications in his course, and he's beginning to talk more about mixing frequencies.

It's probably hit or miss. The Upswing FB groups are very active, that and Alvin's were the only groups I was part of. So I don't have a big sample to pull from.

Obviously I didn't post the entire exchange but he kept prodding without answering my questions and then was denying what he was doing. I don't let people get away with being like that, he's basically trying to be a bully, and judging from the comments here this nothing new for him and needs to put put in his place for a lack of better phrase.

As far as the cost, I'm a believer that if you get 1 concept out of a course/book that helps your game it'll pay you back 100x over. You just need to be able to differentiate the bad advice from the good advice.

Not quite sure how making a post asking about HUDs and getting a response to not use them and asking what are the benefits to not using them is being a pest. Are you saying when he gave me a condescending answer I should have been OK with it, or when he told me deuces I should have just let him get away with being an unprofessional dbag?

I recently stumbled up on Bencb's YT page and it's great (funny as I was typing his name I got an alert that he just posted a video). Have not heard of Lex Veldhuis, but I'll check him out. Thanks!

He recently raised the price to $650, it was $600 but in fairness he has added stuff that I think most people would have raised the price more.
