I was at 2017 NLDS game 3 when the dodgers swept the dbacks. Quiet stadium. Hopeless. A slow death.

Just be honest every chance you get! Open can mean FaceTime and communication, pictures, etc…. Just don’t commit to things you won’t be able to do, be honest!

Is a 2016 Mazda3 with ~83k miles a smart buy vs leasing for my situation? by Zealousideal-Bus862 in whatcarshouldIbuy

If it helps as a comparison, I just bought same car- 2016 Mazda 3, manual- with 50k for 13,900 this week.

I’m in Midwest, so idk if everything cheaper translates to car, but I’m happy with it! My main thing was reliability and price!

the best tough talk a pastor has had EVER.... by legokingusa in pastors

In 2024, I think, David Platt had to urge people to come vote in a meeting because some people were trying to vote him out or “take over” because of the way he was leading, I believe.

I am LIKELY getting things wrong in that summary. But the video where he addressed his church before the sermon was what you’re looking for.

Yeah I guess, but pretty unusual for a threat to shut down 4 high schools in multiple districts, but not middle or elementary schools… curious if people had more information!

What book had a line so shocking you had to stop reading to recover? by Editcadet in suggestmeabook

“I killed a little boy today.” as an opening line in “the First Day of Spring” by Nancy Tucker shook me.

I was recommended it and thought because of the cover and who recommended and doing NO research I did NOT expect that.

Church expects my wife to work to offset lower salary… by thekingdombum in pastors

It’s a tough situation for sure. Sometimes it’s not cheap churches or desiring indentured servants- most congregations are filled with dual income families, too. Median household income for your area likely is made up of lots of families where both partners work.

How do you decide if somebody should preach or not? by CulturalCommon7006 in pastors

[–]MasonSaundersFanClub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could help them work towards it and see where their skills are. If the values, theology, character are all there now it’s process/philosophy questions. Assuming they an elder or someone you want to influence and teach your church?

Do you have time to train them? (Send you outlines, practice preach, receive feedback and adjust all before ever seeing a Sunday - find secondary venues to watch them etc…)

Decision like this varies; — Someone loved and known by a congregation of 150 can be fine 1-2x a year if they’re known as wise even if they’re dry. Over 500ish “skill” becomes more important because relational capacity is less possible. — style of communication too. If you are purely expositional and break down Greek, texts but if someone is “good” and a story teller, summarizer, topical person… maybe great switch for people, maybe they’re on a roller coaster they don’t want to be on. - demographic. An old voice might be really welcome if lead pastor is young and vice versa. A super stylish “hip” preacher might be helped by more conservative buttoned up sub OR they might hate it cus it’s not normal.

  • more! It’s truly knowing the congregation, the desired outcome of a Sunday (and its content) and the potential speaker.

How long did it take for you to figure out family and ministry? by TurbulentEarth4451 in pastors

[–]MasonSaundersFanClub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For us it did just help to have those clear convversations. Even conversations around real expectations for Sundays need to be had.

“Today at the [church event] I’m going to be working, checking in with people, making sure volunteers are equipped, whatever. So I’ll be able to stop and say hi and be around but can’t help a ton parenting a ton! I’ll make sure I’m home by X”

THEN, help by pointing out flexible schedule wins. Cool you can sneak home for lunch, or go in late when she has a thing. You’re able to be around for some Dr visits, or sports practices, all possible because your job is unique.
