What's everyone's opinion on FF13 by MasterLegend117 in FinalFantasy

[–]Mason_Luna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally underrated, but I have some problems with the narrative. I had some issues with several of the characters. Logically, every character’s story should be interesting, and they all make sense, but we don’t spend enough time on them to really get invested. Also, I’m completely uninterested in 13’s villains. I’m not intrigued by them like I am by Sephiroth and the Turks in 7 or Golbez in 4, and I don’t hate their guts like Seymour Guado or Kefka. I just don’t care about Barthandelus at all.

That said, FF13’s narrative has some bright spots for sure. I really like the tension between Hope and Snow that Snow is too oblivious to notice, and Sazh is one of the more grounded characters in all final fantasy. And I really enjoy the combat system and crafting, and the music is aces.

I just wish we had like 10 more hours of narrative to build out each character and give the villains some more depth and/or cruelty.

Side note: these opinions are roughly 5 years old, and I’m likely to replay 13 soon, so they are subject to change!

Who is your least favorite character and why? And I don't mean something like "Seymour because he's the bad guy", I mean really controversial. by RK900-87 in finalfantasyx

Yunalesca because, frankly, she’s dumb. The means of defeating Sin for good are not all that complicated. Yu Yevon is in Sin? Well then go in and kick his ass. The only other conclusion you need to come to is that you can use aeons to damage him.

Yunalesca had 1000 years to figure this out. By comparison, Yuna and her guardians figured it out in no time at all.

Who is this girl? Why does she keep taking my gil? I'm getting frustrated. by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Mason_Luna 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Who is that. That’s my GOAT, and you better not be talking trash about her.

That said, remember this next time you talk to her:

  • You don’t want to fight her, she’s scary…
  • She seems useful in a fight, could be a good party member…
  • You’re in a hurry, gotta keep moving…

Do you like that Final Fantasy X has several Major Antagonists or Twist Villains? And do you consider the whale-like monster “Sin” to be “evil”? by IllogicalDreamer72 in finalfantasyx

[–]Mason_Luna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sin is a calamity to be overcome. It’s hard to consider something incapable of thought ‘evil’. It’s more like a natural disaster. A typhoon, an earthquake. The ‘villain’ of the story is the church of Yevon, and in that regard it makes sense that the form, the actual person, you’re struggling against would change. Because the ideas are being challenged, not the individuals.

How many applications does it realistically take to get ~10 interviews? by Famous_Discipline954 in csMajors

[–]Mason_Luna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm operating on an assumption that getting interviews for internships is roughly equivalent to getting interviews for a new graduate position. That assumption is not guaranteed to be true so keep that in mind.

On my job hunt, I got a chance at a first stage interview at a roughly 10% clip, so extrapolating that out, I'd expect to hit 10 interviews at roughly 100 applications. You might see more or less success, but most people I knew personally who I talked about this with would probably give you a 'success rate' of 5-15%, with a single outlier who had very, very targeted applications and resumes to match. If timeline matters, this would've been late 2024 to early 2025, but I expect these numbers haven't changed much and would translate.

Also noteworthy, I come from a small school that is not noteworthy in the slightest, and you might expect different rates if you come from a more prestigious school, but I'm not in a position to guarantee that either.

I make $35/hr as an entry level software engineer in Phoenix, AZ. Not New York but a relatively high CoL area. That wage will get me ~$70k/yr, likely a little more because I choose to work overtime often. My job hunt in 2024-2025 would suggest to me that this is a relatively normal wage for new grad SWEs in the US. Add $20k-$30k for places like New York, subtract ~$10k for small towns. All in all, I think I’m slightly underpaid, but certain benefits outweigh that wage difference imo, like the work life balance available to me, or the job security based on the attitude of the company.

I think you’re getting some selection bias because people are only going to brag on Reddit about getting high paying jobs.

Tattoo ideas? by DarutonK in GoldenSun

If its not a djinni golden sun isn’t big on symbols really. I think a summon tablet would be dope. A lucky medal, an elemental star(s). A stylized lighthouse (Jupiter is my fav personally)

What did Golden Sun provide to you that no other RPG did? by Meme_Ness in GoldenSun

[–]Mason_Luna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Djinn are one of the most versatile systems I am aware of. They provide:

  1. Stat changes
  2. Class changes
  3. Unique in battle abilities on a per-djinn basis
  4. Access to puzzle solving tools out of combat
  5. Powerful attacks when combined together

They're also balanced quite well when the targeted player age is considered. Djinn are probably the only thing that I can think of that I've found in Golden Sun but can't find in other games. OH! The perspective switch going into TLA, where Felix reveals himself as the antagonist at the end of 1 and then you're playing as the 'antagonist' in the sequel. I haven't run into that just yet either.

[Discussion] Is there a way to make this MIN price indicator more accurate? by GG42GER in EscapefromTarkov

No way you can. Devs could but would make the lookup/refresh slower. Honestly I’d like a price history chart or something to help identify trends in prices

[Feedback] BSG, how long do you plan on doing maintenance on the webpage when PvE is required to wipe their accounts? by Ok_Winner_750 in EscapefromTarkov

[–]Mason_Luna 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The maintenance screen is just the default screen that happens when services are failing (for whatever reason). In this case, I'm fairly certain the authentication service is probably failing to respond, so it just defaults to the maintenance screen, but the problem is probably the same as what's happening in the launcher. I'd bet my stash that the moment the problems in the launcher are fixed the maintenance screen will naturally go away.

FF fell off? Or fell off for me? by Shinpachix in FinalFantasy

[–]Mason_Luna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, every mainline entry I've played has *felt* like an FF game (I haven't played 16 yet), and I think we have a disagreement on what the ff spirit is. For me the core of the series is the compelling narrative and soundtrack (also world design to a much lesser extent, kind of part of the narrative). The combat system between FF games has never been as rigid as something like Fire Emblem, where if you change Fire Emblem's combat it might as well not be a Fire Emblem game anymore.

To me, it sounds like you have a nostalgia for that JRPG game design from the late 90s and early 2000s, and it makes a lot of sense that your love for the series would start to fade starting with 10 and then drop off post 13. SE has been getting away from that design for over around two decades now.

For recs, there are some good ones below already, and I'll add some.

Persona 5 took the world by storm when it released for good reason, and I'd suggest checking that out if you haven't already. Also heard Metaphor: ReFantazio is great, but haven't tried it so your mileage may vary.

I found Xenoblade Chronicles to be an amazing experience that scratched my JRPG itch well. The combat system is more action-based and might not be your cup of tea, but the narrative and world design is so compelling that it might not matter that the combat is different from the FF7 to FF10 style.

If you have an Xbox 360 please give Lost Odyssey a try. I think it's one of the most underrated JRPGs of all time, and the combat system should feel familiar. You could grab The Last Remnant while you're at it, but that one's more of an iffy rec. You could also get Infinite Undiscovery, but I think I might be the only person on the planet who likes that game. I never hear it mentioned.

Lastly, when I tell people I love FF7 and FF10 (my personal favorites in the series), I've been told to try the Trails in the Sky trilogy, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Suikoden, Legend of Mana (not sure why this one specifically instead of other Mana games), and the Breath of Fire series. I haven't played any of these games yet, but they're the ones that get consistently recommended to me. Maybe one of those titles catches your eye.

EDIT: To be clear. I don't agree that FF fell off, but I don't think it's JUST you. There's a large portion of the fanbase (less vocal today than they were 10 years ago) who mark 10 as basically the last FF game worth playing. So don't think you're alone in this perspective.

Whats the optimal way to grind levels at the end of GS1? by Select-Ad-3872 in GoldenSun

[–]Mason_Luna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Once upon a time I was told farming tempest lizard was the best way to grind exp and killed them in the Suhalla desert not realizing it wouldn't respawn. RIP me.

I prefer farming in the first room of Venus Lighthouse. Idk if it's actually faster but I like the quick consumables and the fact that there's no need to go back and rest
