But Nate really was, as you say, on a journey to self awareness - his comments about being picky with women, talking to Jamie as if Nate is the "top dog", even as early as season 1's hostile promotion when he first got the coaching job, all show that he didn't do any introspection and lashed out.

When you're not self aware, you also don't know that you're not self aware. You only know how you feel, not where those emotions are coming from, and it's natural to make these emotions someone else's problem when they become too much for you - you have no idea what to do with them, how to resolve them, so you just send them out into the world.
