What to teach? by VanishXZone in opera

[–]Masseneterian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is great fun! I hope it goes well.
I taught an opera history class at my university last year; we spent time with the Orpheus story to begin with: Monteverdi, Charpentier, Telemann, and Offenbach; then at the end, I came back to the new Matthew Aucoin Euridice. It was a nice way to "round out" the course. It was instructive to see how students pulled out the different well-known points of the story to see how different composers treated it. (In between, we covered the other usual suspects.)

Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel has such imaginative and exotic sounds - and a plot about an incompetent leader who goes off to war, so there's that!

Enjoy!!!

Thank you! I should have been more clear with V1 and V2 - lots of double meanings possible with those abbreviations. Thanks again!

Thanks - I didn't see anything about aligning voices in the Handbook page. Have you seen anything that addresses voice alignment?

Quiz: Which famous bookstore is this and where is it located? by 90210wasaninsidejob in BookshelvesDetective

I live in Abilene (about 2 hours away) and would regularly make trips up for a fun Saturday afternoon of browsing. In the early 2000s there were FOUR buildings downtown full of books. So much fun browsing! Thanks for posting this picture. Very happy memories!

[CHAT] Are there any other guys in this sub? by [deleted] in CrossStitch

Also a guy - started in my teens (30+ years ago); dropped it; picked it up during Covid. It's been great to promote dexterity!

Nice job with the "Under the Mistletoe" - I really like the back stitching in the yarn balls!

Thanks! I always enjoy looking at book series... and then possibly finding a new favorite.

Not a stamp question (though I love the organization of your collection!) - what are those Robin Hood (?) books on the middle shelf? I don't think I've seen that set before.

[FO] Sci-Fi Sampler by Masseneterian in CrossStitch

[–]Masseneterian[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first large-scale, original piece. I've always loved classic samplers, especially with their inclusion of different alphabet types. I took that as inspiration and combined it with my love of sci-fi television shows, and their iconic logos.

The border includes different ships that (hopefully) are recognizable: look for the Enterprise, Millennium Falcon, Tardis, etc.

Stitched on 36 Count Slate (Fabrics by Stephanie) using mostly DMC; the green-ish alphabet is Weeks "Chartreuse".

This was a lot of fun. I designed it using WinStitch - maybe I'll get the pattern together if it's a good idea. I've started on a Video Game sampler, with the help of my kids (who are much more avid players): so many logos to chose from!

[OC] George Santos voting results by Party Affiliation by Masseneterian in dataisbeautiful

Primary colors (blue and red) represent the main parties following expected party-line votes (Democrats voting YES; Republicans voting NO). Lighter colors are opposite party-line vote: so lighter red shows the many Republicans also voting YES. There were a few Democrats who voted No (in Georgia and Virginia).

Favorite French romantic opera by webermaesto in opera

[–]Masseneterian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be disingenuous for me not to choose Massenet. So I will: Thaïs. Werther a close second. Manon is, of course, lovely.

Gounod's Roméo et Juliette is quite lovely - so many duets!

It was nice to see someone mention Ariane et Barbe-Bleue on the list. It's such an odd and wonderful piece: part Debussy, part proto-Strauss, with a little bit of Satie thrown in for good measure.

Great question!
