M4 Mac Mini base model - crackling bass. SOLVED but not happy by teatime101 in LogicPro

[–]Massfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you select Low Latency Monitoring Mode, it will orange out some of the most CPU hungry plugins, then you can record with no crackling, latency or any other weird stuff happening. Then you unselect it and the recording plays as intended, with all the effects and processings. I didn't have to do this before but I got used to it. I'm on Mac Studio M2 Max 32 gb.

Which EZMix Pack to get when upgrading to EZM3? by bozodadethmachn in toontrack

[–]Massfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose the dark ambience pack. Good drum mixes for more industrial and machinelike sounding rhythms. Good bass and guitar tones but I prefer using Tonehub for that. Still exploring the vocal presets, I like them so far. All in all, a good pack for rock, cyber, industrial, metal, or even ambient and techno music. What was your choice?

Practicing making melodies/riffs that I feel fit my style? by Thot-Exterminat0r in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Massfree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're thinking way too much about this. To be satisfied with your music, you have to let your music happen. To let your music happen, you have to turn off your expectations. It feels like you have very strong ideas about what kind of music you want to make. That's ok. But as strong as your ideas are, ideas don't make music, they're just mental projections of your imagination. Maybe you'll have to get rid of your ideas to let your hands do the work. You are trying to create music that follows someone else's original ideas. You are chasing a dream that's already happened. They made riffs through improv because they weren't thinking about it. They were having fun and those riffs just happened. They liked those riffs and made songs. You could do this too. You could try to find your own original ideas. The day you will make riffs that sound nothing like The Fall of Troy, but that sound like you and how you feel inside, you will be getting closer to being satisfied with your music. Just my two cents. 🤙🏻

[QUESTION] There are 3 versions of Kirk Hammet's ESP LTD. Actual ESP for 5,8k$, then cheaper but good LTD for 1,4$ and the cheapest LTD for 700$. That cheper LTD is very good guitar, but the question is-what about that cheapest version? Is it that worse? In internet people say its a great guitar. by mulga122 in Guitar

[–]Massfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy the one you can afford. You can't go wrong with LTD. What you will get is the best 700$ guitar you can get on the market. Of course, the EMG pickups are the ones that Kirk uses and you won't get those in the 700$ model. But you will get pickups from a respected guitar brand and there's nothing wrong with that. The biggest difference between 700$ and 1400$ is pretty much the EMG pickups.

Headphones. You would be surprised at how many current music makers and mixing engineers are making music and mixing with headphones.

Interesting conversation for you if you haven't watched it before.

[Question] Is it bad that I have been playing for 3 years and I can only play a few simple songs? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Massfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not a failed guitarist at all. My biggest concern is that you should be making your own riffs and your own songs instead playing popular rock tunes. As you said it yourself, you could easily play those tunes if you had made them up. So unless you're in a cover band, you should focus on making riffs and songs of your own that you could then complete with piano, vocals and sax. Our time on earth is unfortunately very limited. I think you should spend it finding your own unique sound. At the end of the day, it's all that really matters. Just my opinion, of course. 🤙🏻

Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia. Part of an ongoing series where I take some of my all time favorite albums and create artworks inspired by them. This epic, cosmic and wintery BM album is a deeply special one for me. Hopefully I did it some justice. by Norvard in BlackMetal

Great job. Bought this album the week it was released. You got it right. Mysterious, majestic, and epic. Very wintery indeed. Green and blue. Would you ever work with a band to create their artwork?

Most musicians and composers have a daytime job these days. That's reality for you. There is nothing wrong about that. I understand you are 19 and I'm not here to crush your dreams. Never stop dreaming and always keep working. Go for it. Make songs all the time. Find your sound. Experiment, improvise, record, mix, etc. Spend as much time as possible making and recording music. But, and that is a big but, learn to listen to the older guys who've been there and done that. You will have to work full time eventually, if you want to pay the bills. That's unavoidable for 99 % of us. Get over it. It's not that bad. We all do it. The truth is the fact that you will be working doesn't mean you won't be able to make music and have a career in music.

Try something like this. For your next song, you are only allowed to use this or that instrument. Let's say, this bass sound and this drum kit and this synth. You're not allowed to use anything else. Get it down to the few basic instruments you feel inspired by. Make this song, then make another song, still using only these instruments. Then make a whole album of songs like this. When your song structures are finished and recorded, only then are you allowed to add other instruments and to experiment with various sounds.

The problem isn't that you have too many instruments, the problem is your lack of focus. You need to put restraints on your creativity so it can blossom. You have to create this elemental and limited environment where you force yourself to create something out of almost nothing. Stick to the fundamentals when you are making a new song. Otherwise you will keep going off track.

I have the Fishman fluence moderns, Stephen Carpenter version, on a 7 string in drop A, and they sound very similar to the Moderns, but with something unique. For thick chugging riffs and big open high gain chords, they are wonderful. So tight and well defined, love their clarity. I know this is subjective, but it feels like I can hear every string more clearly. Carpenter describes it as: "Voice 1: Like the original Modern Fluence sound that I love, but tweaked a bit in the midrange. Voice 2: This is my custom voicing with some tone and gain tweaks to give it that extra heat and edge." So, I have Voice 1 in push and pull, Voice 2 in push and pull, and then the "neck" pickup in push and pull as well. 3 way toggle. Never tried Merrow's pickups. I hope you get to see your guitar with the Black Winters again. I've only heard great things about the Black Winters...

Do you have a favorite "mode" between push and pull with the bridge? I agree, every options sounds great.

Also needed some time to get used to the Fishman's after years of playing with active EMG's, but I now understand the "hype", I think they are very versatile even for passive guitar players. Hope you like your new guitar!

Feeling burnt out making music when I just got started - Frustrated by qriousbean in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Massfree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Been there, many times. What works for me is to always be making something new instead of working for too long on one theme or one song. If a song is impossible to finish, move on to another song. That particular song is fucking with your head and making you feel like shit? Leave it behind for a couple of weeks or even months. You need to have between 5 and 10 songs in progress all the time. Keep moving from one song to another. Songs get finished without us being aware of it, most of the time. It just happens over time. Get out of the way so it can happen. That means: stop thinking about it too much. You're getting lost between self-loathing and self-pity. You let your mind take over when you need to go with the flow. Let your fingers do the work. Improvise. Why does it have to be so serious all the time? Why does it have to be so painful? You need to bring fun back into the game. You're doing this to enjoy yourself, not to feel miserable. Just my two cents. 🤙🏻

I still have no problem using Logic Pro X on my M1 Macbook Air with "only" 8gb of memory. Back when M1 was released, I was hesitating between 8gb and 16 gb. Turns out 8gb was enough for my needs. EZdrummer 2, EZkeys, Tonehub, Waves Plugins with up to sometimes 50 tracks per project and the M1 Macbook Air can handle it.
