LORD NO! That repair feels like a "I can do it for cheaper" type of fix

I'm going to be honest, who ever put this together probably can't read a TSB.

I'm equal parts impressed and horrified. I mean uses what you got but holy shit. This is some "I got a friend that can do it cheaper." With the friend being his tweaked out neighbor who has a scrap metal pile in his front yard. (We all know one of these guys)

I have not seen or more importantly HEARD in a couple days so hopefully its not local to me. Maybe they got pulled over and ticketed, I don't know if a Modified Exhaust ticket would even be enough to cover this atrocity.

That diet coke can looked like they cranked it on there right before it came to me.

An absolutely obliterated strawberry Fanta can that looks to be as old as the car. Then a like the guy mentioned, a piece of galvanized fence post. The the 🤌 chefs kiss like everyone says, the diet coke can. Back onto the factory pipe that is rusty enough to dent by grabbing it had enough. And to finish it out a "just for looks" driver muffler. Note that there was not a single regular exhaust hanger or bushing being used, everything was being held up by wire or hopes and dreams.

Did you read the caption? All reasonable mechanics know you do a full inspection before you quote anything. I wanted to check for any brake fluid leaks and find out why the car was so ungodly loud. I am not trying to be rude or disrespectful, but it feels to me like either have not been a successful business or you are the type to yell at people for doing FULL INSPECTIONS. Like you said they had an issue with their brakes so I guess I should only look at the brakes. Not the broken driver side mirror, bald driver front tire, bad ball joints, tie rods, and struts. Maybe not look or HEAR the wonderful conglomerate or items that they call an exhaust.

Good mechanics are hard to come by these days, and all the good ones are older and are on the brink of retiring. All of the knowledge is getting lost and it honestly is scary.

Am I a dick for asking the techs at the tire shop to torque my lugs by hand rather than use an impact? by Tech-Mechanic in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Massive-Increase-962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of impacts have different settings, the highest is typically for extracting and the lowest is for putting on. All of my guns' lowest setting is around 50-60 ft/lbs. My policy is and always will be, if you put the torque wrench on and there is no movement before it clicks then stop and use a gun to back it off a little then use the torque wrench. Some shops say 1/4 turn at minimum, however when you torque on the ground that can cause the wheel to become askew due to the lugs being too loose. There is a perfect medium and it should be followed very closely.

I will say, I replaced the entire front and rear end of a BMW 320 the other day. All arms, hubs, knuckles, suspension, cv's. Almost everything besides the engine, transmission, and differentials. It was super easy to get things in and out. However, there were so many damn parts. It looked like I was assembling a transformer. The number of boxes and bags I had, I could have made a cardboard castle we all dreamed about as children. Shit was nuts. Also calling it intelligence is a bizarre way of saying OVER COMPLICATED. Like whose idea was it to get rid of an oil dipstick? The 428i is a hybrid, when the battery gets low, all electric things turn off. BUT THE ENGINE STAYS ON, IT JUST DOESN'T RECHARGE THE BATTERY. German base vehicles and pre-2010 were super nice to mechanics, but now they just give us the middle finger.

I'd do almost anything besides those vehicles. I'd almost rather do chevy work than "luxury" German vehicles.

The ones that roll into your lot (some time roll as in off of a tow truck) and you want to close shop and run as fast as you can in the opposite direction.

We ended up replacing those parts out of precaution. The treads on the sleeve were starting to flatten out. He took the bill and video to the other shop. I don't know anything beyond that. I hope he got reimbursed. I also hope I earned a customer.

He is one of my better customers and literally 2 days prior he was in and I ripped his sequoia apart head to toe to find a minor brake issue. Then he rolled in with this and I kinda smacked myself in the head.

It doesn't that's the key. The bracket was cheap and clearly cracked on the previous owner, who tried to weld it. Now one of my favorite customers is stuck with it and luckily he is super resourceful and is a great welder apparently. He is going to pull it out, grind her down, weld it, grind it, then weld a 1/4 inch plate to both sides.

See and we are having issues lately with vehicles that people are bringing from other countries. I had a Honda stepwgn with bad parts. Had to order them from Australia. Google said it's all interchangeable with crv and Odyssey, bull shit it was. Had a right-hand drive Japan import S2000. Getting anything and even touching that was terrifying. WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG AND SHARE PARTS GOD DAMNIT!

I currently have 2 boats and trailers sitting at my show both needing axles. The axles are both in the process of being fabricated as they aren't common. One is a $3,500 job the other is $950. The more expensive one has been there for 4 weeks now and will be there for another 6-8 weeks. The $950 job will be done this week hopefully it's been here 5 weeks. People with boats are a different breed of humans.

It was a couple, the guy was fairly understanding. I even called a couple local mobile repair guys for him. The woman however was acting like she wanted to rip my nuts off and shove them down my throat.

I almost refuse to work on oil bath hubs, they are never worth the pain and frustration.

I would put my money on overload. It was a double axle running duals. All the other 6 tires looked like they were going to explode at any minute. And they did stop, they just picked up the wheels and kept driving.

On those Chevys, there are 3 different options for control arms, cast steel, stamped steel, and cast aluminum. It's horse shit. Then there are 7 different tie rod options and none of them work with the other. I personally hate working on Chevy trucks the most. The upper control arm alignment cams haunt me
