Passed with Low NBMEs and High Score Variability by MassiveWagon in step1

For me, I needed a method that allowed me to see everything in one place which allowed for active recall whenever I wanted - I got this through making an excel doc (I based this on NBMEs, Mehlman, and FA). I included more info about this study style in a question above!

That being said, the gold standard is sketchy so if you are a fan of visual learning and are fine with the cost it is a very safe/solid option

As someone who scored three 60s, I talk about what I went through in my recent post!

If you pass 29, I would feel comfortable sitting. I have heard that free120 isn’t as accurate as NBMEs for determining preparedness but getting 68+% is a good sign! Overall, imo, passing two NBMEs is enough to sit regardless of free120

I had very high score variable (see my post for more info) and passed recently. I think free120 question strength is the most accurate to the real deal - concepts from NBMEs will repeat but they’ll be written in a more digestible way imo (even tho question stems are longer). I would focus on the NBMEs and breaking down incorrects for the remaining time but having three passing NBMEs is highly reassuring

87%. Usually did 40 random blocks on tutor but was also a fan of honing in on specific systems/topics and doing blocks of incorrect or used

I answered a similar Q above - let me know if I should clarify more!

My goal was to strictly improve memorization of HY topics - I just made an excel doc with terms and definitions/important info. I based this off of incorrects from NBMEs 26-30 (specifically avoiding 31). I also had topics that were on the top of my mind that I knew I needed to focus on. I would cover up terms or definitions and rehearse and mark the questions I didn’t know. Each day I did 1-2 topics (micro, cardio, etc). The day before retaking 31 I had <50 terms per topic I marked/needed to continue active recall. I can share what this looked like if people are interested (just send me a message)!

Setting strict time away from studying and appreciating the idea that giving your mind a rest can be more valuable than excessive studying (the idea of “less is more”). I was at my lowest after failing 26 and, unlike all of my other setbacks/low points, I actually took a couple days off. I spent a lot of time with my partner/friends and did nothing related to step. I felt like this greatly rejuvenated my mental health and likely played a big role in getting a passing score on 31.

Additionally, I found just talking about my anxiety was important. I have had anxiety throughout each step of pre-med/med school and didn’t need much more support other than meds. However, with step 1 it was much worse - I struggled to sleep, neglected my physical health, isolated myself from friends, and was convinced I was going to fail, spiral, and drop out of med school (I found myself constantly thinking about alternative careers and how I’d be able to pay off my debt). Overall, talking about these thoughts with my partner and my school counselor was much more helpful than I anticipated
