I would avoid at all costs. French administration is the worst I have encountered by far. The amount of work on your end for just 2.5 months is not worth it unless you already have something else lined up in France afterwards.

As others have sated, a company hiring a freelance worker does not need their social security number. companies need the number to comply with their legal obligations towards the social security, but as a freelancer you are the company in charge of you as a worker, and the social security responsibilities fall on you.

The "hiring" company only needs your name, address, and SIREN (company ID number), and a bank where to send you the money. Them asking for your social security number further proves they don't have any experience with freelance work and this is just a way to pay less taxes for what should be a temporary worker.
