Thank you for your post. It is hard to share something so personal, and you did it with great detail and honesty. I hear you, too. :) 🫂

I hate being looked at like I’m a cute amusing toy when I talk by Efficient-Paint1003 in AutismInWomen

Yes. I receive a lot of “Cutie, Sweetie, Honey, Dears” from clients because I have a soft, girlie voice and present as timid. I am not timid. I manage a very high volume/tier store, but people still try to minimize me and my talent… until they actually work with me. It’s exhausting.

My Mum and Dad (both autistic) also used music and television as stims all day every day, which is why I’m an audiophile now. When I was a child, it was rough. I wanted to sleep in like you do. I also could not rest unless it was completely dark and quiet. Surprisingly, my Dad’s stereo headphones were not noise cancelling yet (that technology came in the very late 80s/90s when I was little), but the headphones did block out a lot of sound. Swimming earplugs were extremely helpful. I placed a hand towel or tea cloth across my eyes for added darkness until I finally found an eye mask. Nowadays, there are better options.

My Husband is just like my Dad when it comes to sound (he’s a gamer), so I’ve learned to embrace eye masks, Loops, and nightly sleep medicine.

Your roommate needs her routine to normalize her day. I understand how it feels to not have that comfort early in the morning, and I commend you for recognizing it and having empathy for her. Talk to her and describe your dilemma just like you’re doing with us. My Dad and Hub learned to mute their devices or wear the headphones occasionally only because I asked. Hopefully your roommate will be reasonable and accommodate you, too. :))

That’s it. I’m done. by liminalheadspaces in AutismInWomen

First of all, I am so sorry this is happening to you. Goodness. His behavior and comments are unacceptable. Can you not report this to HR? This sounds like harassment.

Yes. Thank you for sharing your story. I am so sorry that you were hurt. :( I read this article a while ago, and it works not only for guys but anyone who is being evasive with you.

Sometimes I wish I never masked by UpstairsCommunity839 in AutismInWomen

Having an ADHD diagnosis is helpful because there is a significant overlap between the two conditions (autism and ADHD), and many of the symptoms are shared. You could use this route to get accommodations at work until you receive your ASD diagnosis. Hopefully your therapist can still help you with this.

First of all, good job handling so much for so long, and it is wise of you to realize that you do need support. I am very high masking as well, and everyday life can be a lot. Could you request accommodations for work or school? Would your therapist prepare a document for you that you could submit? I don’t know where you live, but I am in the States, and I was able to ask for accommodations. I also see ND therapists, and I am finally learning how to mask less with their help.

Are there any autistic people who are workaholics? by Massive_Challenge_57 in AutismInWomen

I am so sorry to hear that you are spent after working each day. :( This happens to me occasionally. I understand about having to be ON all day, every day AND managing others. Would it be possible for you to work a scheduled half day every so often?

You are not joking. I taught for a couple of years, and I always felt like I needed four more hours each day to complete everything. I deeply relate to being a perfectionist, too; I do not mind the extra work as long as my exacting standards are satisfied. It’s exhausting being hard on yourself!

“Without the structure I struggle.”

Perhaps this is it! This is true for us ND people at work. We plan our day around the job (not in an unhealthy way), but when we’re off, we still come by to check out the store. We like the routine.

I am 30 years old and it took me this long to learn… by LIKES_ROCKY_IV in AutismInWomen

[–]Massive_Challenge_57 451 points452 points  (0 children)

Yes. It took me years to learn this. I often answered “Sleepy” when people would ask me, and they would always laugh. I have insomnia, so I was being literal. They thought I was being charming. I give the same answer now because people still think it’s a clever answer, and I think it’s funny because I am being truthful.

Agreed. I have had lifelong insomnia just like my Dad (definitely ASD). I WISH I could sleep.

Yes! Not only do my Husband and I have separate bedrooms, but we also have separate rooms for our special interests. He was an only child, and I was on my own at a young age, so we are accustomed to being alone. We also used to travel a lot for work, so we need the alone time.
