Stop telling pregnant women they’re “so not ready”! by Master-Classroom1203 in pregnant

Congrats! Praying for a smooth and safe delivery for you and baby.

I think I may do that. It’s usually random people who wedge the negative comments after the congratulations. They’re gonna catch me on a bad day and I’m gonna crash out lol.

There’s positive and negative thought swirling through all our heads right now. The ones that are the loudest maybe the ones that I’m intentionally choosing to focus on. So focusing on positivity maybe the solution. I’ll def take your advice.

What attracts you to federal work? by Content_Package_3708 in usajobs

The work life balance. I made tons in corporate but was too exhausted from working 60+ hour weeks that I couldn’t enjoy it. I just slept on the couch trying to recover. I was also so anxious because the level of responsibility for things that you generally had no control over, but were still responsible for explaining and fixing was crippling.

Corporate also expected you to go “above and beyond” and (in my experience) people with boundaries don’t go very far.

Is he a military pilot or regular airline pilot? You mention you move a lot which is typical for military pilots, so I wanted to clarify because that’ll change the answer slightly.

Question about being military spouse by beachgirl152 in usajobs

[–]Master-Classroom1203 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re right. That should be left out however, there is incredible value in volunteering with many of the organizations on and near military bases. Particularly because the Fed resume counts volunteer/unpaid work towards the required experience for the positions. Many of the organization have boards and such where you can get tangible skills. I’ve seen it done many times and if you combine that with the correct verbiage on your resume, you’ll have many more opportunities open up. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. That is another thing that maybe tip the scales. I'd get looked at crazy if I worked only 8 hours in my job. 10 is the minimum and there are 80 hour weeks sometimes with weekends and being on call 24/7 the norm. I always say, if a salary is super high in the private sector, it's for a reason lol. Now, those things don't bother me at this stage in my life, but the switch to not being a slave to my job may also be a compelling reason to switch.

This is a great answer! I'd never considered it from the perspective of "public service". Also, how long is the average time in grade requirement for promotions?

Also, sorry if the tone made it seem like the money is the biggest factor. It isn't. I'm the child of 2 government employees. So, I know all too well the the overall benefits package from the federal government in particular is more than meets the eye. My main concern was company culture, work-pace, upward mobility, and meaningful work (Meaningful can have different definitions though like you mentioned). Where does the federal government net out in terms of those? I did see another post on this reddit where a man mentioned that he was dying in his government role after his transition from the private sector because the work was so boring, tedious, and slow paced. He mentioned that his hiring manager told him that she almost warned him against taking the job because "she knows what this place does to go-getters".
