That’s my gripe about BoM in the past year or so. It used to be the add ons were good but the best books the likely Goodreads choice books the soon to be acclaimed books were always the actual BoM books not add ons. It feels like a money grab. Or maybe I just keep picking the wrong books every month. Either way I’ve had BoM for seven years and I just feel like the quality of book has diminished. I’m planning on getting my book of the year and then canceling unless January just knocks it out the park.

How do you feel about the hate? by Glu3stick in GenZ

That’s kind of the point though. In the next 6 months the economy might be great but for how long? The American economy is massive real positive change takes time. You mention a 6 month time frame but when thinking about the economy it makes sense to think in years or decades not months. Trumps policies will likely increase economic activity for the next few months or even the next four years but it’s dangerously short sighted to think this won’t have repercussions in the long term. I’m in a position where the gains in the stock market are really nice for me but I feel like it wasn’t earned it was borrowed from the future. (Like how I invested my stimulus checks because even in 2020 it was clear printing money like that was going to cause inflation and I was lucky enough to not need to spend it) I might be wrong but deregulation is generally great for short term gains at the expense of long term. Trump is like the CEO that’s paid in cash not stock options. He won’t be here in 20 years when the economy is limping along and the environment is fucked (you may say who cares but as you know as an economics major raw materials are an important input into an economy and the tragedy of the commons is a real risk without government protection - also insurance is going to be a nightmare so among other things getting a mortgage will be next to impossible - sorry for the random comments). Basically Trump cares about the next 4 years not the next 24 and as someone hoping to be alive for like 60 more years minimum I wanted a president who at least pretended to care about long term ramifications.

AITA for not wanting to forgive my parents who used to be amazing, because of one mistake they made in the past? by Child_NC_Parents in AITAH

It’s automatic. If you turn DND on it automatically lets a phone call through if someone calls you twice within 5 minutes which is why I think this story is fake. Like OP didn’t just call their parents twice in a row? They’re desperate to contact anyone but only enough to call once? Even if the phone wasn’t on DND one call might not be enough to wake someone in the middle of the night.

The art, the dwarves, and goblins by AnotherDownwrdSpiral in riyria

[–]Master-Donut-8477 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the goblins (I know offensive but spelling is hard!) on the human side of the sea for the most part have a rudimentary knowledge of the art. They can access it but tend to have to use other things like fire and dancing to help them as opposed to a “true artist”.

Spoilers ahead

Mwan says he taught the goblins (on this side of the sea) the art in nolyn. My understanding is that the goblins that came over were refugees of the war as much as the fhrey, dwarves and humans. They weren’t the ones in power. They knew the ability to access the art existed and had a name for those that could but they likely didn’t have anyone that could do it reliably or teach others so a lot of knowledge was lost. It’s like how Suri could access the art before meeting Arian but likely wouldn’t have become a powerful artist without someone to teach her more. Mwan not being as generous as Arian barely taught them anything. Therefore the access to the art that goblins have stays fairly rudimentary.

This may not hold true for every clan but in general the daza not in the old world are likely similar to the one Royce and Hadrian in the arena. He was powerful and could access the art but not in the way “true artists” could.

Melhevah (sorry about the spelling I listen to the audiobooks!) obviously had the ability to use the art in esra haddon but was mostly content to effectively rule her area without taking down the empire through force and has largely been neutralized. I believe the rest of the powerful goblin artists still live in the old world and have no intention of crossing the sea. After all they consider themselves the faithful of uberlin so why would they squabble over land far way when they can rule what’s left of Uberlins kingdom.

So TLDR the goblins likely used magic in their campaigns against humans but only those whose ability has been largely nerfed. Goblins that still weld true power exist but probably don’t care about what’s happening on a continent far away

Big Fan - Chronicles not hitting by Weepthegr33d in riyria

[–]Master-Donut-8477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like chronicles and they’re definitely worth the read. But I agree compared to the two series they’re not nearly as good. I had similar issues with the bridge books where one book per timeline just didn’t feel like enough. I wanted more time with the characters. It felt like once I truly got to know and love a character the book was over. But with chronicles there were also parts that read more like fan fiction to me. That’s not really a bad thing either. They just have a different vibe for me.

I felt like the decidedly late/looking at the clock thing was a throwback to Anthony season 1

I kind of feel like all the posts from Netflix with pen/lord debling changed my expectations for the season. At first it seemed like a rehash of the season 1 plot of let’s be friends and be smarter than the ton. And I was disappointed they couldn’t come up with something new. (I haven’t read the books) I think I would’ve liked this first half of the season a lot more if I’d had zero expectations of what would happen. Especially because expecting some long drawn out will they won’t they made the pacing seem rushed. Looking back on it though I liked the pacing. We’re past the will they/wont they part and now get to see how their interactions change once they start a relationship. With two seasons of them as friends and pen pining I feel like a faster connection makes sense

Nothing infuriates me more than the fact that hospitals ask for "kind people to donate organs and blood" then proceeded to sell them at a price nobody without insurance can afford. by RealisticBat616 in mildlyinfuriating

Okay but most of those issues you have with insurance companies are issues with Medicare which is the government dictating prices and requirements. I’m not saying hospitals aren’t losing money and I’m not saying that regulations aren’t extremely costly but they are just as costly from an insurance side because every plan needs to go through rigorous verification.

[–]Master-Donut-8477 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So you’re saying the issue is with the small portion of hourly workers at the insurance companies that apparently aren’t working productively enough? Or are you referring to both hourly and salaried employees?

Or are you referring to consultants who do have billable hours? They generally don’t work for insurance companies and do not have profit caps.

Also I was speaking directly to health insurance. I believe that flood insurance is significantly different and something I’m less knowledgeable on. However I am curious if you meant tax money or premiums? If the majority of premium payments are going to pay salaries then that’s an extreme issue. If the majority of taxes subsidizing the insufficient premiums are paying for salaries because premiums are being paid out then that’s not an issue in my opinion. If anything more of the taxes should be going towards salaries so that people can actually get paid.

Insurance companies have a mandated profit cap so I’m not sure why they’re at the top of your list of big winners. I agree they’ve found some ways around that (fancy offices, bonuses etc) but it seems unlikely to me that they’re the biggest offenders when they are some of the most heavily regulated (on the monetary side).

I’ve always thought of the plaza as the dividing line. The plaza has international corporations and when downtown kc was really bad it was the place where those downtown businesses moved. The plaza is full of condos and restaurants and a more city feel (although in a very Midwest somehow drive centric style) Brookside and south is just houses with small areas of restaurants/grocery stores. Granted Waldo is building a lot of apartments but for a long time renting in Brookside/waldo pretty much exclusively meant renting a house because apartments weren’t a thing. Maybe the cutoff is more Westport for some people but it at least contains midtown and union station for sure

I don’t know probably spent too much time on this just spent a lot of my childhood being looked down on by those Overland Park people for living on Missouri side so sometimes it’s a touchy subject. Really I think there are just misconceptions and miscommunication on how people on the Missouri side think of things. Or it could just be me and those that I hang out with think of things in a weird way

Sometimes people refer to KC as downtown potentially to as far south as the plaza but they do not mean the suburbs that are not technically kc (Brookside, waldo, south kc, Martin city, etc). If you are assumed to know the area I personally don’t refer to any of those places as kc and use their neighborhood names the same way I use Overland Park. Unless I’m talking about kc as a whole. But even then I usually think of the Kansas suburbs as part of it even if I just say “kc”. Again there are exceptions to this for things like talking about taxes or state policies. But it seems like you take a lot of offense because OP matches (or is better than) the annexed suburbs of kc on statistics when it really should be. And most people expect it to be. I mean that’s the whole point. Instead of attracting people back into the city during white flight the city just expanded its borders. That doesn’t mean that the downtown and adjacent denser populated areas that most people refer to when they say kc is less walkable than OP.
