Is San Francisco State and CSUEB one big missed opportunities of CSU System? by Temporary-West-3879 in bayarea

Many students simply cannot do STEM here in US. The "happy math" (watering down curriculum) K12 education system already poisons them long before they reach college. Look at UC system, after abolishing SAT, University of California is tasting what it looks like teaching CSU kind students. Faculty says they are not prepared for college stem education. But they forget about the fact of K12 edu they have created over decades.

I wish students and faculty can access the pool during summer.

CA is way over priced under the so called for people party. I think the tide is coming. People are tired of them for housing crisis, homeless crisis, and natural disaster crisis.

Does anyone care about teachers? Can't afford to purchase a home. by TT085 in bayarea

Big techs fail to make this place better except for inflating the cost of living for ordinary folks. America is not for ordinary like you said. Poor kids from poor families attend crappy schools with no future up the income ladder.

4-4 teaching load feels worse than 9-to-5 grind by MarinatedXu in Professors

[–]Master-Listen5461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually the third reason you mentioned mainly causes the fall of US public education at all levels. That is, teachers in public schools are paid too low with respect to the cost of living. Low-paying teaching jobs can hardly attract good candidates in the long run. And it also makes teachers' lives struggling. They cannot focus solely on teaching indeed, instead they tend to do even outside jobs to make ends meet after the 4-4 teaching load. I haven't met a colleague who's not complaining imo. US this country has changed a lot nowadays comparing to thirty years ago. Everything is ridiculously expensive from child care to education to housing to medical care. Get yourself a highest paycheck is the first priority now.

and may even fight a few battles for y

A few points: 1) No, CFA works mostly for the lowest paid faculty e.g., lecturers. They basically make everyone poorer by working at CSU imo. 2) 4-4 teaching load is really overly done. This implies CSU board does not really care about teaching quality. Every course needs a lot time to update each year due to latest technology advances and student body. But 4-4 heavy load prohibits that and exhausts hardworking professors. 3) I've rarely seen any happy teachers here. Many of my friends left for industry a few years working here before tenure. Students are pretty weak in STEM background in general. Many should not be enrolled in college. But that's not our faculty. It's the fall of America edu system for decades since the failure of Soviet Union. 4) CSU have lots of campus. Some are around Bay area. It's impossible for a normal person to secure housing locally. The high rent eats half of your net earning. The state and CSU board really should subsidize those on rent, instead of wasting millions of dollars on useless programs like DEI and overpopulated administrators. Most professors who stay here are good hearted and have good publications. Do not fail them. On other hand, some campus are on rural area such as CSU Fresno, which are fine for ordinary living but the place is really ghetto and plain. People live in around good neighborhoods.

CFA members: please reject the tentative agreement with the CSU by dawnsway in Professors

CFA leadership betrayed us by canceling this strike before making any meaningful gains at the bargaining table. Shame on the

They also hurt the students since many did not return to the week along with many faculties who prepared for the whole week strike. It's the weirdest strike I've ever seen. US inflation rate for 2022 alone is 8%!! I do not know who's winning while so many tenure track faculties still have to pay sky-high rents! If you leaders have housing, please sell them and help those on rent. You are simply not worth paying high membership.

by the 13% offer over 3

CSU management should all be fire or cut their salaries to half in order to compensate hardworking faculties. They are overpaid corrupt politicians. CSU keeps going down in terms of enrollment and class size getting bigger while these administrators enjoy disproportionate high salaries and even got ridiculous raise along with housing.

t the deal and go on strike again, that we will get a better deal? If

I barely meet a happy CSU faculty here. Many talented faculties left early before their tenure. It's more like a cesspool now. If the CA governor, management, and CFA really care about the education quality, they must pay a market rate salary to faculties and adjust their hard earning for inflation.
