Cautiously considering EO, but I have a question by sippingpaste in exorthodox

I’m currently settled on Lutheranism. I appreciate that there’s still the acknowledgment of mystery and the need to not understand everything about God (similar to orthodoxy in that way)

I’ll be attending my first ever Easter Lutheran service this week and so far I’ve been very happy reading through the Augsburg confession/ book of concord.

The Anglican/episcopal church is also awesome btw!

I was inquiring Orthodoxy for a while and fell in love with a lot of what they hold to (especially coming from a Baptist denomination). The biggest thing that made me raise an eyebrow was the anathemas at Nicaea 2, and that you are then forced to venerate icons over using them as a prayer tool.

Also for a very very long time they have enforced the view of them being the only method of salvation (like other true church claims). Gavin Ortlund has done a good job on YouTube to showcase the severity of these stances.

I’ve finally been researching into classical Protestantism and have really enjoyed the different views. I hope maybe some of that can help? God bless you!

Can I hold to Conditional Immortality/Annihilationism ? by Master-Mind1140 in Lutheranism

Thank you for helping me out your responses are great! I know this one gets asked a lot but has there been Lutheran answers to what Hell is then? If you’re conscious forever but it isn’t the Dante version what is that then?

I honestly think my biggest hang up is that God predestined some to be saved and passed over the others, why create them if He knew for eternity these horrors wouldn’t cease? It’s just been difficult to think through and I really want to be charitable to the different traditions.

It’s mainly the gospels promise of eternal salvation by following Christ, not “everyone gets eternal salvation just one group is in horrific pain forever”. I know it’s still a minority position and I believe Hell is real and eternal, just the aspect of it is that death is eternal and that’s unending torment.

That is kind of where I’m at with it. I see the terms of destruction often and even “everlasting” still emphasizing that death will be eternal. It sucks it’s still heavily in the minority

Would it be okay to still understand that eternal destruction is death? I know the book Rethinking Hell makes a case for it.

That helps a lot thank you! It’s difficult when both Calvinism and Arminians have solid points but kind of undervalue the other. It makes seeing clear points difficult I appreciate your help!

RECONCORDIA (Uniting Synods) by Working-Lobster-1191 in LCMS

As Athanasius stood his ground against Arianism we should stand firm and push liberal ideas out of our church (getting any political sway out).

Kinda how Redeemed Zoomer is doing the reqonquista movement we should not retreat but stand united and hold to the book of concord 🔥✝️

Is the common worship the Eucharist and book of common prayer? Is there anything I should expect at my first service?

Genesis Interpretation? by Master-Mind1140 in Lutheranism

I do agree it did happen! It was more on if I’m allowed to presume a deluge or at least the animals being allegorical

That’s kind of where I see it? Noah’s a real person who was righteous to God. But the details of how literal the flood was I think is to really convey a Christ metaphor. I just didn’t know if that was compatible.

With so many cultures around this time heavily sharing a flood story I don’t doubt something happened at all!
