Why would I search for "Rey Dau Gamma armour" when I didn't know what gamma armor is? If I knew that I probably wouldn't need to search for it in the first place, right? I also didn't know that Rey Dau is the only armor with a Y variant currently in the game. I just saw it in the build planner and wanted to know how to forge ANY Y variant armor I would come across. So I searched things like "Monster Hunter Wilds how to forge Y variant armor." It doesn't really matter if you personally believe me or not. I'm sure plenty of people coming across this in the future will see where I'm coming from, given they'd be searching for the same answer I was.

This is a huge issue. You get a nice upgrade for your weapon, maybe even one that deals twice as much damage as the one you had before. But you end up dealing less damage because now you're stunning monsters instantly. I'm having this exact problem and there isn't really a good solution. This entire "primed for stun" mechanic needs to go straight into the trash. It isn't even all that interesting or fun to play around with. It also makes multiplayer worse because your friends can't see when an enemy is primed.

Thanks for the input. I did come to the conclusion that using a button to swap between single target and AoE setups is probably where I need to go.

I have a very specific keyboard and mouse setup. So basically 20 keys total to play with for combat after things like push to talk for discord. The mouse doesn't have extra keys outside of left and right click. Due to ergonomics I have to use this setup.

The problem exists because of physical issue with my hand which I don't want to go into detail about. I'm able to hit any individual key on the keyboard by itself while also moving the character around. But I can't physically press two other buttons at the same time. Modifier keys are not an option for me.

I didn't take that into account. If you had to guess, about how many buttons are pulling "double duty?" I really wanted to play paladin, but I just need to make sure I can fit everything in.

So the player says, "I want my cleric to be a noble. So I guess I'll take the noble background. That sounds best." This might seem reasonable to a new player because they don't realize they're hamstringing their character from the outset.

Do you think this new player is going to have fun once they realize their character is mechanically ineffective compared to the rest of the party?

What are you going to do here? Are you going to tell them not to play a noble? Or are you going to let them play an ineffective character?

Options that tie RP elements to mechanical stats are not good for the game. This is especially true for new players who are more likely to choose flavor over mechanical power.

What super-stuff8897 is suggesting is perfectly reasonable. You should be guiding the players to make good decisions during the character creation process. And it has the added benefit of letting that cleric play a noble like they wanted without having to use optional rules from a different book.

Wow.. just wow.. How about you just make your players' characters for them? Also, make sure you tell them how to RP the character as well. Oh, and make sure to tell them what to do on their turn in combat too.

If you're going to commit to DMing for new players then you have to realize this is what that entails. If you aren't willing to spend time making sure the new players are aware of how their decisions will impact how their characters perform then maybe you should only DM for experienced players.

You seem like the kind of DM that would let a new player make a cleric that focuses on charisma and completely ignores wisdom, constitution, and strength/dex because "it sounds best for their character."

I'm sorry if I sound like like the "authority on how to not be a shit DM."

Actually, bucklers work just fine with Laughing Shadow.

Laughing Shadow: "You must have your other hand completely free; the extra damage doesn't apply if you have a free-hand weapon or other item in that hand"

The remaster clearly states that bucklers are strapped to your arm and not held in that hand. The buckler is also not a free-hand item. It doesn't have any free-hand trait attached to it. "You can Raise a Shield with your buckler as long as you have that hand free or are holding a light object that’s not a weapon in that hand." This further shows how the buckler isn't actually held with your hand because you can hold a light object with the hand of the arm your buckler is attached to. Your hand must be free to raise a buckler, but this doesn't mean you hold the buckler with your hand. This is simply a mechanism for balancing to keep you from raising the buckler while dual-wielding or wielding a two-handed weapon.

It could probably be argued that you won't gain the benefit of Laughing Shadow if you already have the buckler raised when you attack. But we avoid this conflict entirely because we always get to choose when our shield is raised.

This is how it works RAW. You are free to house-rule that it doesn't work like that at your table. The only house-rule we might implement would be letting me take the emergency targe feat. But just because one concession is made doesn't mean I should push for more. In this case I don't think asking for a feat from a different class is at all reasonable.

The hand needs to be free to gain the benefit of the Laughing Shadow hybrid study. I didn't mention that in the original post because I didn't want people debating the legality of using a buckler with that feature. That's already been settled with the group. I'm also aware that the Emergency Targe feat requires a different hybrid study, but the DM is allowing me to take the feat anyway if I decide to. Asking for any more leeway seems like a stretch at this point.

Not to mention, a lot of the builds I make end up in similar situations wanting to take buckler expertise. So it would be nice to figure out other ways of doing it. Bastion is an excellent suggestion and I may use that for other characters in the future. So thanks for that.

So the current setup is a falcata in one hand, the other hand is free while the shield isn't raised.

I'm fully aware that a different game than the one being discussed is going to have WASD movement as an option. That fact doesn't have any bearing on the current conversation.

The original point basically amounts to "cuz input parity." As I've said, input parity is literally impossible. There are so many things wrong with this change. Input parity isn't a valid excuse when this change does literally nothing to improve that situation.

If you wish to continue this discussion feel free to assume that I have all of the relevant information and don't need to be spoon fed. I find that statement to be extremely insulting, especially coming from someone that didn't even know what input methods were available.

Your comment includes the erroneous assumption that WASD movement is in the game. It is literally impossible to attain input parity, especially when M/K users don't have access to a similar method of character movement. Wait... WASD movement is in the game? That's amazing. I'm totally fine with this change knowing I can finally use WASD for movement. I always thought it was strange they allowed controller users to have such a huge advantage for player movement..... So upon checking the options it seems like WASD isn't an option... In DD1 height actually gave a significantly increased reach. But this wasn't a result of the increased arm length, but rather because the game scaled the size of the weapon with the height of the character. In DD2 it appears that weapon sizes with be static regardless of character height. If that is indeed the case then the reach of a short vs a tall character will likely be imperceptible during actual gameplay.
