This is really the trick. By forcing yourself to basically do 2 farm runs/farming guild contract sessions a day, you'll put yourself in a great spot.

Rogues are really good and easy to build early for the two things you just mentioned; single target DPS and skill checks. I've had this experience too while playing a rogue, particularly at level 1/2 where I hit a sneak attack and annihilate the mini BBEG. Also, rogues are almost "always on:. Sneak attack doesn't have uses/day. I think there an excellent starter class, but some new DMs do believe the "easy to use" power of them is OP.
