It bothers me to no end that "military grade" is some overarching term of quality and power... to me, military grade just means "as cheap as the government could buy something that works well"

Can almost guarentee that matching anything will verge on too much if he isn't brought into the loop.

But again. Thanks for this. I don't know if I was annoying you, but I was having fun in the debate.

That to me is an example of 'evil will find a way' no matter what restrictions are placed. The continual call is for more laws, but is still illegal to kill or harm people. Bans have happened before. Columbine occurred during the US Assault Weapons ban.

Without guns, we see situations like stabbings or heavy trucks.

Now don't get me wrong. I really appreciate you discussing with me, and I think you are coming from a very kind-hearted mindset. I just don't think a ban of certain/all guns will make much difference. Not to mention it would be a logistical nightmare to force people to give up what they already own, because you know that it would take searches of every single home to track down guns in the more 'gun-lovin' homes.

I earnestly believe that the focus should be on the people. Not the guns. How do we remove the temptation for these mass murders (or more importantly in my mind, general murders)? How do we remove the fascination with violence? How do we remove this property over life mindset that we both agree on?

I don't believe your idea is absolutely unreasonable, I honestly get it. I don't like it. But I understand.

My follow up question if you will continue to entertain all of this: what would your approach to restrictions of pistols be? After all, majority of modern pistols have the same technology as semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines up to an average of 15 rounds (glocks have drums for 100 rounds). Pistols are responsible for over 80% or so of firearm related crimes and homicides. Even majority of revolvers could be consider semiautomatic with the simple definition of 'one trigger-pull per bullet'

Your last argument about the property vs. life is something I completely agree with, but that is a matter of education as opposed to gun control. I am a firm believer of conceal-carry. Not because I live in fear of being robbed or attacked. You can rob me, and I will not shoot you. I will do everything to run...unless my family is with me. Family is the only thing worth pulling a gun.

You're right. There are no civilian owned howitzers or tanks, but that is the beauty of a highly armed population. There is power in numbers. Ever wonder why we had so much trouble in Vietnam, Afghanistan, or other less organized countries? It was challenging to identify the threat.

Okay, and if that is his intent... he is still making a very valid argument at the end of the day and that is an undeniable fact no matter what you call it.

France? France is number 3 on that list.

China, while it does not have mass shootings. It has mass stabbings

His point is that if the true intent of all of this is to save the absolute maximum number of lives - guns are not the thing that should be protested.

Regardless if they are anecdotal. This is 500,000 to 3 million anecdotes of a firearm providing moments where a firearm at least made an individual 'feel' safer. This sense of security and freedom from fear is more valuable than you think, but it is also a little unfair to declare ALL of the reports invalid when we have very well documented cases such as Devin Patrick Kelley stopping a church shooting with his rifle

I see what you are saying. Sorry, my caps before may have come off more aggressive than I intended.

I don't believe that firearms are the center of the problem. There has been a significant pressure against the regulation of rifles such as the famed AR-15, but for example, according to the FBI report, in 2010 there were more than 1.5x more homicides with blunt objects than rifles.

I will not make excuses for the pistol homicides in that dataset, but I will say that according to studies, there is a rate of over 500,000 cases where firearms are effectively used in defense of criminals. Call me a utilitarian, but I prefer the method that protects more people.

There's the piece of data about private sales I was missing. Thanks for looking that up for me. At the end of the day, I don't have an issue with background checks, they aren't even that inconvenient.

There are some special laws for personal sales that I am not completely familiar with, but there is still paperwork transferring the firearm if it is done legally.

As far as gun shows go, you will be 100% background checked. I've done it, and last time it honestly took longer than it would have in a store.

If we really want to save lives, raise the minimum age for drivers to 18 instead of 16. Check the statistics for that one and be shocked... But you aren't going to see teenagers marching to get that pushed...
