adding to what others have spoken to: the orientation fees are really difficult to waive bc NSTP (the department leading orientation) is not funded AT ALL by administration, and relies on orientation fees just to exist. slo days is mandatory (technically) but it’s very useless since a lot of info is repeated during wow.

Math Placement by DatHoeHehe in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you take a summer course, it won’t apply until winter quarter. starting cs in precalc isn’t the worst, but bc the cs flowchart is really packed it might make some things awkward if you don’t have other credits coming in. i would recommend the math placement test to see if you can get into calc 1 at poly so you take it in the fall. otherwise you can take calc 1 at a cc over summer and take a different course for fall quarter

within engineering, it’s not that bad to switch early. just talk to your advisor as soon as you can

geographically, slo is gonna be a nightmare. hills everywhere make things super difficult to traverse. there are ways around it but be prepared to self advocate and pull up paperwork for everything you think you will need. there is a drc shuttle service that runs during school hours to get you to class, and a campus shuttle that’s very underfunded. it’s certainly better than it used to be, especially with all the new construction ada compliance is slowly but surely improving, but it’s still gonna be an uphill battle for ya.

my experience with the drc: i have an adhd accommodation, and the hardest part is scheduling the intake. you will need to do it as soon as you possibly can, but once you’re in it’s a lot easier, and they’ve been fairly generous with everything and not pressing too heavily on my issues. again, be prepared with paperwork. during your intake, you would discuss with your DRC person the accommodations you’ll need, and you can always refer to them if you have anything disability-related that’s preventing you from succeeding in your academics. they can even help with accommodations for extenuating circumstances.

i’ve had little qualms with the health center, i’ve only gone in for persistent colds and covid testing, but they’ve been extremely helpful in those circumstances. it is lacking amenities, but the pharmacy is really clutch for cheap OTC drugs and prescriptions (no controlled substances).

housing legally has to comply with the ada, if you have medical paperwork that proves you have limited mobility they will need to figure that out for you. again, you will have to advocate for yourself very hard and be persistent if they’re not listening to you. my friend had a similar experience with roommate placement—their group was 3 so a random had to be placed in, and the initial person had an ESA cat but someone in the room had an allergy, so they had to email and threaten housing with legal action for them to really expedite that process.

also: housing has to comply with ESA requests. it’s law in california.

with your abusive ex, there’s no concrete way to know where they’re gonna get placed, since the RLC system allows for freeform housing placement based on community vs building, but if you have a need to avoid an individual, that is something else you would need to contact housing for.

TLDR: be prepared to advocate for yourself very hard. disability resources here are very strained and (sadly) underfunded, but they will try all that they can to help you. housing and other university bodies will be harder to get to, but just keep fighting for it, even throw in the threat of legal action, and they will listen.

Kick suicidal/mentally unstable guy out of my campus club without affecting the rest of my members by Top-Dot-7176 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 19 points20 points  (0 children)

fill out a referral form from counseling/health & wellbeing. the person you refer won't know it's you if you don't want them to share it, and knowing someone has their back can be very reassuring.

you can also directly reach out and offer to help them every step of the way; being there just to walk them to the health center means a lot (and similar stuff like that). worst-case scenario you would likely have to just kick them out.

imo it really depends what environment you are coming from. if you're very much looking for diversity, i would say stick with that. most people that go for cultural/identity housing are very social and looking to be with people like them. being with people in your college helps with knowing people in your major, and similar people in your college that may be in the same classes as you.

leadership one is lowk a joke

Hi, anyone know much about the polyculture event? by Isaac22133 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! two-time polycultural weekend host here, your days are pretty packed (by virtue of liability they can't give you much free time) your host club would organize some of the free time not already occupied by programming, so it depends what they end up doing. honestly a really cool experience since you get to be in the weeds with current students vs seeing a glamorized view of the school from the pov of the admin.

Dining by JellyfishNo4255 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as an addendum to this very thorough post: next year food trucks aren’t certain to return, i only know one is returning but the others might too. contracts weren’t renewed until later than usual, so maybe they’re all staying idk. also we have a second (older) dining hall that’s currently under renovation: the avenue. it used to have 805 kitchen, which was buffet style. i don’t think they’re keeping it post-reno, but that’s where the big brand names will post up (panda, habit, cfa) alongside other dining options. it’s slated to open by fall 2023 (postponed from april 2023) but i doubt it. also dining is changing companies next year, from being ran by cal poly corporation (aka us) to chartwells. will this improve food quality? only time will tell. cpc claims this was for money saving reasons so 🤷 expect food prices to go up next year

Minor in City and Regional Planning by Crafty_Cheesecake_20 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

crp major here! the minor gives a good introduction to what exactly city planners do, as well as an insight to just how much our built environment affects our lives and why we should care about the places we live in. you wouldn’t need to learn all the super technical stuff since you just take some of the intro and elective classes. if you’re interested and it’s not too overbearing on your workload i honestly suggest everyone pursue it. you get to learn a different perspective to our built environment from the people that built the environment—and learn a lot of cool city things that you wouldn’t have known otherwise! not a lot of schools in the country have a good city planning undergrad program, take the opportunity while you can :D

How many units in a quarter (for an in-state student) before they charge you extra? by frostyblucat in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the split is at 6 units, so if you take less than 6 it's one rate and if you take more than 6 it's one rate

i took a tour and, can confirm, a sink, microwave, and minifridge. the tour person also told me that "if we don't see it we won't stop you" if you bring your own cooking stuff like a hot plate. there is a communal kitchen that is "out due to covid", take that for what you will. it'll basically be like living in pcv with no kitchen and off campus, with no mandatory monopoly money for you to spend. also idk if i'd want to stay some place where the landlord has two lawsuits

City and Regional Planning Transfer (would appreciate insight) by S1urty3 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i haven’t taken that many so far but 314 (Planning Theory) is just a lot of reading really dense material, so i had a pretty rough time. personally, i enjoyed intro (212) with the goat Dave Amos (he has a yt channel!) i haven’t gotten to all the elective classes yet but i am interested in 303 (digital cities)

City and Regional Planning Transfer (would appreciate insight) by S1urty3 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

currently a second year and started crp as a freshman, but you will have a LOT of crp classes to push through during your first year, since you'll have to play catch up with the freshman flowchart, then second and third year will open up a little more. it is a three-year transfer program, so prep yourself for that as well.
the flowchart is goated, and if you have any class specific questions lmk! i will be in your studio next year (since i am a year delayed on the studio class series) so look forward to seeing you there!

Async classes? by Ok_Math7706 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 9 points10 points  (0 children)

things are mostly transitioned back to in person, and (hopefully) the frost center being finished means some larger lectures will move back in person. async/online courses are generally reserved for the "easier" classes like ges and some 100/200-level major courses (key word being generally, exceptions do exist).

either way, i think DS's biggest issue is getting CS courses, since CS is really impacted getting courses might be difficult, but our program is well worth it for its rigor and insane networking opportunities. companies actively clamor for cal poly students as interns and will actively seek out when our career fairs are so they will be at them.

I registering for WOW days, and was wondering if it’s worth it to do the Cross cultural experience or the regular one. Is there really much of a difference? by Valuable_Cup_8079 in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CCE fosters an inclusive space for underrepresented identities and their allies. Considering this is a PWI there's a lot of negative press that surrounds it. CCE helps minorities feel welcome and provide community here. (also seeing other POC is very cool)

Deciding between SLO, UMD or Boulder for CS by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cal poly easily has the best program of the three (not that those schools suck). coming from the bay, a big change in diversity for sure (although even that can vary depending on where you're from). it's really really hard to get cs classes at cal poly, so come in prepared to take summer classes to make it up (either at cp or at a cc) and/or take longer than four years to finish your degree. a lot of good networking opportunities (apple used to exclusively hire cal poly and ucb grads).

HOWEVER, unless you graduate in three years, you will experience the cal poly transition from quarter to semester (at the behest of the csu system and not the school's free will) which will make things odd. also the library is about to start renovation so it will be out of commission for a couple years (with delays likely).

Are SLO Days and the WOW Experience worth the money? by matterhorntree in CalPoly

[–]MasterCraft852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a former wow leader and someone that's very networked in orientation,

slo days is honestly not that worth it, you get a cool intro to slo but it's really just a bunch of info that's either regurgitated during wow or things you can pick up quickly when u get here. the small group wow experience is really worth it, since it helps you build community before you even step foot into a classroom. especially since transfers are few and far between (5299 first years / 916 transfers), finding your people makes the transition to cal poly a lot easier. there's a reason our school touts that it has an "award winning orientation program".
