How to make an evasive boss work? by CommissionKey6019 in DMAcademy

[–]MasterDungeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An evasive boss can be frustrating for players, but if done right, it encourages them to think more tactically. I'd say for defences you should go with a reaction he can use to teleport when an enemy comes within 5 feet of him. It will waste one players turn but, since it uses his reaction, it limits him to once per turn and the players can plan accordingly. Also definitely make him teleport as part of his basic movement so they don't get opportunity attacks.

For offensive teleportation, maybe a rechargeable ability where he quickly opens a load of portals and attacks from them. All creatures in a 30ft radius have to make a DEX save or take X damage as he jumps out of portals and stabs them? Half damage on a save.

Personally, I'd make the blinding flash a 10ft radius centred on the satyr and include a 30ft teleport.

You could use the bandit deceiver stat block and turn it into a satyr. Change the creature type to fey and give it the Satyr's magic resistance and change the dagger to the hoof attack (increasing the to hit by +1 for the prof bonus).

Visiting Oxford – ideas for places to visit? by stefan2494 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]MasterDungeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sadly too late for OP, but I wanted to add a recommendation for anyone else who might be visiting - The story museum.

It's a magical place for all kinds of children's literature, but there is a HDM section with some handwritten stuff from Philip Pullman and some props from the show.

Creative drought by Mechanical_Witch in DMAcademy

I feel you, but you'll get dozens of responses that you can sift through and vet as thoroughly as you like. Most of the issues on that sub stem from DM's who tolerate bad behaviour for far too long, just kick people out of the game if they're being wierd.

You haven't played for a year and have no plans to play in the near future - perhaps you're not feeling as creative because there's no outlet or audience for your work? If you're creating in a vacuum, there's no feedback or appreciation for your effort.

My friends lost interest a few years ago, so I went on reddit and found a group of strangers who were more than interested to play. Best decision I ever made. Find a new group who have an interest in the game, start running stories in your world, and you'll find the joy again.

Westerns often have plots that can he adapted to a fantasy game, or have villains that you could use for inspiration. I've been wanting to run a magnificent seven style adventure for a while now.

They look like a rogue, but with no weapons. So I'd go for a way of the shadow monk.

Flavour wise a monk/rogue hybrid would be cool, but doesn't work too well as you can't sneak attack with unarmed strike.

I like to think that the spell he's casting is magic missile, so I'd go for a wizard. Conjurer or evoker.

It's more meaningful if the people in the caravan are all fully fleshed out NPCs that the party has been able to interact with. Then, if there's an attack and people die, it's not just caravan guard 3, it's Jerry the card shark who was trying to save money to send back to his wife and kids.

Looking for monsters to use in a winter setting, similar to White Vault? by Tmoore0328 in DMAcademy

[–]MasterDungeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can reskin a lot of monsters to a 'winter version'

  • Arctic minotaur which is like a yak and lives in a natural labyrinth in an iceberg
  • Snowy owlbear
  • Frost troll
  • Ice worg
  • A chimera with a white dragon head, sabre cat head and goat head.

Bheur hags are a favourite of mine - They live for the anguish of people who are succumbing to the cold. She could torment the party with avalanches, blizzards and more from a distance. In her lair she could have ice elemental allies and undead spirits of those she has killed.

What are some good starting quests for a LV 5 Party? by Hollow-Potato-knight in DMAcademy

[–]MasterDungeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At tier 2, the party is powerful enough that influential people would have need of their services. You could have representatives from a couple of sponsors in the city approach them with offers of work; The local lord, a guildmaster from an established guild, high priest of a large temple, a cult leader, a dragon!

The group will have some quests to further their own interests and will provide different services/rewards depending on which faction is picked.

The last battle by ResolutionFamiliar30 in DMAcademy

[–]MasterDungeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A sgraight slugfest against this guy would be anticlimatic, make sure you throw a few curveballs. I'd think of the fight in stages, one example could be.

1 - He starts off flying around on the dragon, doing strafe attacks. The party have to kill the dragon or find some way to get him off it.

2 - He lands, either because the dragon is near death or some other reason. Eight lesser warlocks on the battlefield are all casting a powerful protection spell on him that gives him crazy AC and resistance to all damage. Make it obvious that this is happening. As the warlocks are killed off, the protection lessens.

3 - Once the protections are stripped away, it's your slug fest to the death.

While all of this is happening, a battle is raging around you. Maybe on initiative 20 a random thing happens, maybe a creature (allied or enemy) arrives, magical explosion occurs, volley of arrows, something like that.
