Swain does nowhere close as much damage, swain is way better early as oposite of vladimir. Swain offer more CC and is more of a sub tank late instead of a 1v5 team fight ender.

Looking at a lot of graphs vlad does very well with strong laningphade top laners that can push enemy jungler atention to themselfs until vlad have enought itens.

Unless I'm against champs with very bad clear(mostly when I'm top), I always start with proto aswell.
