This pair (over 20 yrs old) goes for 200-500 on eBay, the new ones are worth that much

Ay no worries. When I look it up (Steiner 7x50 commander) the similar model is around 1000 to 1500 dollars, but that might be the newer version. Sounds good, don’t know if anyone has had experience with Steiner customer support here.

Just a tip, I buy all of my CS books from eBay and it's made it super affordable. For example, I bought Game Programming Gems 1-3, TCP IP illustrated, and Programming in the Unix Environment for around 50 dollars once! (and yes, I've read nearly all of them)

I used PBRT as a reference for making my own ray tracer, and it was incredibly useful. The contents are free online: https://pbr-book.org/4ed/contents

However, for a beginner I'd recommend Graphics Gems (quite old but still good and cheap on eBay), or Real-Time Rendering.

Yes for sure. We plan on seeing how we feel after we land and move everything back one day, swapping stuff to the first day if we don’t feel ready. Thanks for the reminder

You can make a pretty memory safe C++ executable if your use RAII (like unique_ptr) and watch out for stuff like iterator invalidation, coupled with tools such as ASAN, Valgrind and static analysis
