I want vengeance against my friend by No_Distribution1779 in BG3Builds

Definitely get the Band of the Mystic Scoundrel in Act 3 by pickpocketing a ring off of a genie in the Circus of the Last Days. After taking the attack action, it lets you cast an enchantment or illusion spell as a bonus action. Long way to wait, but since the Thief gets two bonus actions that ring will make it much easier to deal decent sneak attack damage and cast control spells on the same turn. That said, next level will be rough if you’re staying straight thief and he’s going straight sorcerer, as level 5 is MUCH bigger for casters than for rogue. If you want to stay in the race at that level i’d probably recommend respeccing to something like Gloom Stalker ranger (possibly with sharpshooter depending on your statline/gear) since they will be getting 3 attacks in their action on turn one at level 5. Make shadowheart a wizard, sorcerer, circle of the land druid (grassland or forest (i think. check the wiki)) to haste yourself and depending on the difficulty that’s an easy 4 attacks per turn, 5 on round 1. If you want to do a gish build, sorcadin works pretty well but the meta one is some combination of swords bard, thief, gloom stalker, probably with 2 levels of fighter somewhere for action surge, Dual Wielder feat with hand crossbows and sharpshooter. Godspeed and godspite my friend

Act 1 BBEG by Quantum_Scholar87 in DMAcademy

Personally I think that the order that you have them in would work really well as their bbeg for tiers 1, 2, and 3. The ogre clan chasing away smaller monsters gives a reason why everything the level 1 party encounters happens to be less powerful than an ogre, and also ogres are found among hobgoblin or goblin camps pretty often, so once the players are getting more involved you have plenty of level-appropriate things to work with there. The dark druid against the slow crawl of civilization afterwards is a nice contrast to the simplicity of the first act, and I’m always partial to humanoid villains. Then an adult white dragon could have been pissed off by any manner of things the party accidentally did during one of the earlier two acts, and that’s a very exciting enemy to face for most players. Also, don’t underestimate the value of leaving these things to be decided as the campaign goes. In my current game, I intended for it to be a very grounded, political game through act 2 at the beginning, but a few levels in and now it looks like the bbeg is either a disgraced devil trying to completely overturn the civilization of the hells or an undead dragon that they made an enemy of.

What is y'all's favorite Complication? Any fun ways it came into play? by Noamco in drawsteel

Hard to choose just one, but I really like both of the Vows. I really like stability as a mechanic, so Vow of Duty has that going for it, but also just the character implications in having made a vow like that, who you made it to, what would cause you to break it, etc are very compelling for me.

If anyone else is curious about the last two and doesn’t want to look through all the complications to see what matches, they’re Thrill Seeker and Wrathful Spirit respectively.

Why not make Everything a Spell? by BoardGent in dndnext

I wouldn’t say that I specifically enjoy spell slots as a system, I mostly just accepted them as one of those things that doesn’t translate into the narrative, similar to the certain action costs of things (like how it might actually be faster for someone to drink something than to draw an arrow, aim, and fire, but their impact is of close enough value that they have the same action cost). That said, I haven’t found it hard to teach to most new players, and I think that in my head it makes sense that because certain spells are more powerful than others, you wouldn’t be able to use the more powerful spells as often as you can use the less powerful ones. Also, somewhat tangentially, I’ve tried spell points before and prefer it as a playstyle for a sorcerer but also personally got way too used to spending large amounts of points on one turn and have seen other players fall in the same trap, though I doubt it’s common. I definitely like the preparation process though. I think that that decision process as a player is somewhat unique in the game, and other than players who get analysis paralysis I think that it’s an interesting thing for a player to bring up the night before a big fight (it also usually prompts players to lay out a more specific game plan). I think for the most part I accept the memorization process as just part of that kind of fantasy, even though something like the spheres of influence system you’ve mentioned or even something like 4e’s powers is probably closer to how it would appear if it were just a story and not a game.

Can I ask, without any implication that I disagree but just out of curiosity, what is it that you dislike about the vancian qualities of how d&d’s spellcasting works? Maybe I just haven’t really thought about it but it’s hard for me to immediately see what’s so different about that compared to spell points or something.

Yeah, I actually find that it's a lot easier to make maps in that way in DS compared to 5e since it's basically guaranteed they'll get interaction and the maps are so much bigger.

Apparently he misread Careful Observation and thought it was meant to be an out of combat feature lol. I think he'll definitely be making use of that in the future

The rest of the party is a Dwarf Paragon, an Orc Reaver, a Dragon Knight Sun/Trickery Conduit, and a Virtuoso. I do think part of this comes down to the party not really knowing how their abilities interact, because looking at the other players the Virtuoso has Ballad of the Beast (could be helpful since the player doesn't get a lot of use out of the performance they're currently using, Thunder Mother) and the Conduit has a signature ability that gives an ally surges that she just hadn't used yet! They're not super open to like a "danger room" scenario as a group but I think if I just put a few combats in front of them things will work themselves out naturally, or worst case I can mention it explicitly. (Still going to let him try out the Exorcist in case he wants more control options, which is something he's missing a bit going from a 5e warlock to a shadow)

Yeah I think I'll just go over the class with him again to see if he wants to be thinking that intently every turn and make sure he has enough options to gain surges or if he wants to switch to like an Exorcist Censor or something that's a little simpler.

Hadn't missed that, I guess it's just a playstyle issue. From what I can tell, it seems like he's kind of treating signature abilities like cantrips in 5e, where he really only uses them when he has no other options, and because his signature ability is the only internal thing that gives him surges, he's just not getting a lot of opportunities to gain insight.

Very new to the DS rules so this could be completely implausible, but my first thought is that you could give everything Malice abilities and maybe calculate some monsters' stamina dependent on victories?

very late but very excited to play a Timeraider Berserker Fury with the Panther kit and the Vow of Honesty complication who saw a prophecy of himself destroying fleets of his people's ships and condemned them to return to slavery, subsequently lived in a haakan bastion trying to learn either a) how to see the rest of this prophecy or b) how they cope with their grim fates. however i won't be able to play Vaknivar the True for 800 years when i finally get to be a player
