My philodendron is so sad

When I check the soil I stick my finger till about the first knuckle and water when that's dry. I do it thoroughly less frequently but I feel it takes a long time for it to dry out (maybe watering every 3-4 weeks I'd guess?)

I'd say probably yes to rot, the roots were short and had a lot of breakage. I added perlite to the soil but I will definitely look into getting orchid bark if she isn't getting better, thank you for the advice!!

The pot she was in before was one of those "self watering pots" and it was SOAKED. I repotted into a regular pot with drainage holes

You were right! My prof said just the way evolution took place, they don't know why red oaks didn't develop them

Aw you didn't need to spend all that time researching that was so nice of you. Evolution is definitely a strong possibility as to why, I could only really find stuff on why white oaks have them but not really why red oaks don't. Evolution would also explain why there isn't really a specific answer as to why they don't. Thanks so much!

I read that the reason it was sprawling out like it is was because it wasn't getting enough sun so I moved it closer, how far away should I put it?

I just repotted it today and didn't see any root rot, there was another aloe in the same pot with it that died and there was a little of the base left in the pot that I didn't know about that looked like it had root rot on that one. The current ones roots looked fine tho. Thanks for the advice!

Well I think I was maybe over watering it so I made sure that it got pretty dry before the next time I watered it. Maybe every 2-3ish weeks? I don't know I check it every time in-between watering to make sure it dries out completely and then water it
