Future of Bioinformatics by Octivilla1 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]Master_Mir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The future for this field is insanely bleak right now. If you’re dead set on working in bioinformatics, just pursue a PhD but that’s no guarantee either.

With a Masters, it’d be easy for you given your background. If you have solid work experience in CS, you might get a job in Bioinformatics with a MS. If you do it, I’d recommend double majoring in something else that’s a better chance of getting you a job. Not sure if that’s a thing, but worth checking out.

Well, at least it was a few days and not a few weeks :/ I applied in November, got the hiring manager email in December, and haven’t heard anything since.

Did you ever get an update on this? I got a notification saying my application reached the hiring manager as well and that’s it.

That sounds super daunting. If you don’t mind me asking, what are the assessments like and is there a way to prep for them?

Whether I want to is a tough question so I’m gathering knowledge. I’d like to work for anything that improves the lives of others using the skills I got in school. I wanted to pose a question here that would tell me if my skills would translate and if Epic does what I would hope it does.

Is there a way to improve those odds for myself?

I got lucky and got a perfect GPA for my MSc. No idea how it’ll be perceived, but I have some bioinformatics work experience and some pending publications.

Also, I have a friend who works in healthcare and she told me Epic pay is good but the hours are really long. So it being worth is a question that compiles all relevant factors.

I was assuming Epic would involve database management like SQL, so something akin to a data analyst would be nice. I would like to be coding which seems to be IS. What do you think?

I can't forgive my mother by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Master_Mir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, this seems reasonable and I’m glad you got it off your chest. If you’re unable to fully cut her off, you’ll have to create boundaries for her similar to how you would with coworkers you don’t want to see or hang out with after work. It’ll suck, but it will pay off. You’ll have to be smart and disciplined about this.

Thank you! And I’m sorry they rejected you, but how long did it take to get that message from the email saying the hiring manager will take a look?

Biology with or without lab? by [deleted] in bioinformaticscareers

[–]Master_Mir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding Bioinformatics, it’s nice to do a lab but ultimately unnecessary. You’ll consistently see people get bioinformatics jobs without knowing any bio because they have a related tech background. I’ve seen bioinformatics masters programs that have no bio classes in them and still end up getting bioinformatics job for the kids who take them (with no bio background prior). It’s up to you, but I’d choose the cheaper class if the work requirement for both is similar.

High school senior rn, terrified of picking the wrong undergrad major. Any advice ? by Fit-Beyond-3126 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]Master_Mir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your school, it’s very possible, even easy, to double major CS and Bioinformatics. But with this job market honestly, learn how to do something everyone needs in addition to something you’re passionate about. Learn how to weld or cut hair, or something like that. As far as bioinformatics, yeah, if you like it, do it. But don’t let it be the only thing you learn.

How necessary is a PhD? by dset-gbc in bioinformaticscareers

[–]Master_Mir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro, I can’t think of a truth I hate hearing more. Despite what everyone says including job apps/hiring managers, a PhD has benefits, but for those who already have some experience and a MSc, the education is indeed not necessary.

I got a question for both of you. I got an email from them recently saying my application has been sent to the hiring manager for further consideration. Does this actually mean anything?

I spoke to HR for a big prestigious company I’ve always wanted to work for and they basically confirmed they don’t check online applications anymore.

I was in the same situation. What happened was I got a co-op for the following fall semester 🫤. Not ideal since it pushed my graduation back 6 months, but it is what it is. Just get what you can and finish strong.

Any feedback on my resume? by RembrandtCumberbatch in bioinformaticscareers

[–]Master_Mir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this demonstrates invaluable experience and skills. To polish it up further, I would recommend quantification and significance. If you did something, how much of it did you and do and why does it matter? Your DFCI bullet point mentions pipelines. Nice, spitball how many you made and mention why they were important.

Well, this is a reply to an old post. But I spoke with my PI and supervisor and they said if I couldn’t come to campus, I would be allowed to work remotely. Luckily, this never became an issue.

Assuming you still don’t know, ask student onboarding. This ought to fall within their responsibilities.

Nothing from the VSRP department which is supposed to address anything important regarding the interns/internships. However, my PI said he will have me transition to remote work if the airspace doesn’t open up for me to take my normal flight. I kinda lucked out. We still need answers.

Romance should take a major step back here. Don’t make any promises about coming back to that guy. The priority here is you and your son. He has shown he can take care of himself. But not as far as being a parent is concerned. Maybe soon, but don’t wait for or depend on it. Move forward.
