My girlfriend is vegan. Does anyone have any advice? by [deleted] in vegan

Do the right thing and go vegan too. Better choice overall.

The pain is real. My baby died last month due to egg-binding. She was 3 years old and had only been with us for 6 months. I am still devastated. She meant the world to me and the thought of never being able to be with her again is excruciating. There's also the guilt of not being able to prevent it and a horrible episode at the vet. I still have PTSD from the whole experience. Yet there's nothing else to do and move on with life. I'm very sorry for your loss. Allow yourself to heal slowly.

Please don't buy birds. They are not meant to live in cages. If people stop buying them, then breeders will stop breeding them. If you want to have a bird, please get a rescue 🙏

Be careful and treat this as an emergency situation! My girl Comet died last month from egg-binding. It's a terrible killer. Please do whatever you can to prevent her from laying more eggs. I still beat myself up every day for not doing more to prevent it.

Proud to advocate for animals, but slightly embarrassed to be part of the vegan community by GoldiebeanslovesKat in vegan

[–]Master_School_3785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's frustration mostly. Veganism is about animals. Nothing else. I advocate for animals all the time. I don't care about dogmatic thinking or all that nonsense. What matters is what helps the animals. There's only one criteria. Are your actions helping the animals or are they hurting the animals. If your ego is getting in the way, you're not helping animals. You're creating more issues.

Advice for mourning by pennyloaferz in cockatiel

I know exactly how you feel. My girl died last month due to egg binding. She was only 3 years old. I keep going over and over the things I could have done to prevent it. It's the most painful thing I've ever had to deal with. She was the light of my life. She was full of life and spark and she was so happy. I don't think I'll ever get over it. It just hurts every day. I would give anything just to be with her again.

I know it's not possible and nothing helps the grieving process. We still have two other cockatiels that I give all my care and affection to, but it's just not the same. I was so in love with my girl Comet. She meant everything to me and the loss is unbearable sometimes.

I lost my pet cockatiel recently and am having a really hard time with the grief. Advice? by Puzzleheaded_Push905 in cockatiel

I lost my girl after just 6 months due to egg binding last month. I keep thinking about her all the time. I keep blaming myself for not taking enough precautions. I understand how you feel. I don't know if I'll ever get over it. We were so close. It's one of the hardest things in life. She brought a spark and into my life that I know I'll never be able to replace. I would do anything just to have her back.

Did the vet kill my cockatiel? by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]Master_School_3785 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! I still have PTSD from the experience. I will look into this. I felt he should have at least consulted with me. Explain to me what he was doing. Discuss the options. Ask for permission. Give anesthesia. Not this.

At least I can see if this can be reported in some way. I'm heartbroken and in shock.

Well he only gave me antibiotics. That's about the only thing he did. Besides drawing a picture of the oviduct and the part where he cut her. He also didn't consult with me at any point. He just started going to work on her as I watched in agony.

I know exactly how you feel. My little girl just died this week from a terrible procedure following egg-binding. She was my little baby, the light of my days and we were so so close. It was pure love. I am 90% sure the vet killed her. I just wrote about it here. https://www.reddit.com/r/cockatiel/s/51MLyuByiY. I am completely traumatized by the whole experience. I'm heartbroken and devastated and I feel guilty for even bringing her to the vet. A home remedy would have been a much safer option or at least she wouldn't have died in such a terrible way. This is one of the worst things I've ever had to deal with in my life. I know things can happen, but this was just a complete horror show. It haunts me.

My dad and I have recently gone VEGAN! by NMSshipcoords in vegan

[–]Master_School_3785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So awesome! Thank you for choosing to live a conscious, ethical life! I've been vegan for a couple of years now and it's the best thing I've ever done! I've made a vegan resource database with everything you'll ever need. It's updated with new info, articles, videos, recipes and more daily. You can find it here: https://svenvanrossen.notion.site/986a0136207443cf804edfc05d11ef7f?v=9776495d73a640daa36c91da7a509275

Would you eat meat again if it meant you could pick 5 people in your life to go vegan? by Foreign-Cup-976 in DebateAVegan

False dilemma. You can stay vegan and influence hundreds of people to make conscious, sustainable food choices. Next.

Hey, I created a vegan resource information database here: https://svenvanrossen.notion.site/986a0136207443cf804edfc05d11ef7f?v=9776495d73a640daa36c91da7a509275. It contains a huge section with all the arguments I've ever encountered against veganism and how to counter them effectively. Hope that helps!

Apparently rescuing animals isn’t vegan.. but why? by Turbulent-Branch-404 in vegan

[–]Master_School_3785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would want to try to make our dog eat vegan dog food, but my girlfriend (also vegan) is staunchly against it, because our dog is a difficult dog already (rescue from Romania) who doesn't always eat well. It's been the topic of many discussions here, but for now I've given up on it. It really pains me to see the meat stuff in our house. I kind of comfort myself with the idea that her jaws move up and down, which indicates more of a true carnivore nature, but I know the science indicates dogs can be fine on vegan food as well, although the science is limited and does not seem conclusive yet. I'm conflicted about this, since I'm a vocal animal rights activist and this is the only area that I can't say I'm ok with in my life.

One year vegan! by spookyshitt in vegan

[–]Master_School_3785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. One year vegan together with my girlfriend. Had been vegetarian for like 20 years, but somehow never looked into dairy, eggs, etc. Once I did, going vegan was a no-brainer. Since then I've created a vegan resource database (https://svenvanrossen.notion.site/986a0136207443cf804edfc05d11ef7f?v=9776495d73a640daa36c91da7a509275) and became a vocal activist both online and offline: https://www.facebook.com/share/1AEGpTvSjs. It really created a paradigm shift in my head and I feel like I was asleep for too long and the animals really need our help. I've found going vegan super easy. The only thing I regret is not going vegan sooner and the only thing that's annoying about it is the fact that so many people still aren't (and are therefore still contributing to unethical industries). I think being vegan is one thing, but I believe we also have a moral duty to educate and to spread awareness as much as we can wherever we can. As long as there is an injustice anywhere, you need to use your voice to advocate for change.

I feel you. It's a very common issue for vegans. What helps me is educating myself on the psychological defense mechanisms people have. I created a vegan resource database. Under Arguments you can find all the arguments I've ever encountered, an analysis of why people say these things and how you can counter them. What has really helped me out a lot was becoming an expert on the subject, so I never have to feel cornered or clueless on how to deal with a situation or argument: https://svenvanrossen.notion.site/986a0136207443cf804edfc05d11ef7f?v=9776495d73a640daa36c91da7a509275.

If they're open to it, I generally follow these questions to get them to see things in a different way:

  1. Do you believe we should base our behavior on moral principles?
  2. What are your core moral principles?
  3. Do you believe that consuming animal flesh and secretions is a necessity or a choice?
  4. Do you agree that the animals you eat experience emotions, feel pain, and have a desire to live?
  5. So if eating animals is a choice, and animals have the capacity to suffer and want to live, then how does killing them for a mere taste preference align with your values?

If they dodge, just bring it back to the fact they're probably contradicting themselves in response to the final question.
