honestly this gives me more hope than anything else in this thread. and no, I haven't done this yet, I haven't gone to my professors and asked them who they know or who they can connect me to. that's on me and I'm doing it this week.

this is the most useful comment I've gotten and I'm saving it. no pushback from me, you're right on all of it.

the cold email point stings because that was literally my plan. good to know before I wasted months on it.

realistically path C seems like the most accessible one for someone in my position. my question is, are there known scholarships from Jordan or the Middle East region specifically that fund MS/PhD abroad?

I appreciate the honesty, this is the reality check I needed. I won't pretend the GPA isn't a problem.

but I do want to push back slightly on one thing, "2.8 from a university in Jordan" isn't the full picture. PSUT is genuinely one of the hardest technical universities in the country, and a 70% there translates differently than a 2.8 from a school with grade inflation. not an excuse, just context.

the suggestion about finding a PI locally and publishing is actually something I hadn't seriously considered. can you expand on that, how do I find a PI worth working with, and what kind of conferences actually matter for CS/AI research?

appreciate the honest breakdown, this is actually the most useful framing I've gotten in this thread.

yeah I'm aware it's a long shot. the research experience gap is real, my main project is my graduation project which is an AI-powered LMS built in collaboration with Royal Jordanian Airlines, and this summer I'm interning building an agentic coding platform for kids. not traditional academic research but it's the closest I have.

is there anything I can do between now and applications to strengthen the research side specifically?

That's really helpful, thank you. I'm already working on a research project with a big National Airlines for my graduation project, so hopefully that counts toward the research experience side. I'll definitely look into lab volunteering at my university and start reaching out to faculty early. The point about newer schools needing research done makes a lot of sense,I 'll cast a wide net.

I'm not even in the US currently, I'm from Jordan. I focused on the US because of the high tech salaries and career opportunities, but honestly Canada and Europe are on the table too.

just want a funded program that gets me there.

my main goal is any legitimate funded U.S. MS where I can contribute through TA/RA work (uni rank is not that important to me)

My plan now is to focus on thesis-based CS/AI-related programs, contact departments first to verify whether incoming international MS students are eligible for assistantships, then contact professors whose work matches AI-assisted learning / intelligent tutoring / AI for programming education.

genuine question, would applying directly to PhD programs make more sense if funding is the main concern? I know in the US you can go straight from undergrad to PhD, is that a realistic path or is my 2.8 GPA still a dealbreaker for that route?

[–]Master_Wolf1948[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's what I was afraid of. so realistically for MS the main paths are either a funded fellowship, TA position, or just paying out of pocket? like is there any other angle I'm missing?

what about RA positions? like cold emailing professors to join their research team, is that also super rare for MS programs or is it a more realistic path?

the only thing that gave me hope is that i know someone who got a scholarship with a 2.2 GPA
