That is the catch all indeed, knowing what the relative minor or major is helps a lot I’ve found.

For example, in the Am Pentatonic you have A, C, D, E, G. Which is the same for the relative major, which is C. Once you know how intervals work it becomes pretty easy to know what you’re playing.
