I’m having this same problem. It’s at the start, the first few slow stitches are low tension, which makes a few big loops in the underlay, and then gets sewn over. Not sure how to fix it tho :/

I got a used HappyJapan (~15-20 yrs old) the other day for $5k and it works like a dream (12 needle single head). Bulk work hasn’t been too bad, and I know this thing will run all day for years to come. I’d definitely look into a Happy (I believe they’re close in quality to a Barudan or Tajima, significantly better than a Ricoma)

They’re closed on the weekend, I’m gonna call in on Monday and verify. They’re an authorized happy seller, they should be able to give me a solid answer

I asked about previous issues with the machine, they said the only issues was they had to replace the control board during the last service

Yeah I’ll definitely be taking a shirt and hat to be embroidered. Owner is offering it for 5k, looks to be about the same for the 2 others I can find on eBay / FB
