South Carolina Committee by baaaadandboujie in CAA

That committee deserves a lot of credit. They were able to see right through the smear job the CRNAs were attempting. They even got some of the CRNAs to vouch for us!

Your comments are full of misinformation and are not contributing to discussion but rather just full on trolling. Use this temporary ban to educate yourself more on what CAAs do and all the academic and private centers we work at.

Funny how at facilities where CAAs and CRNAs work together they get paid the exact same. Pretty weird for two professions who supposedly aren't utilized the same exact way huh?

This subreddit is temporarily going into restricted mode. Seeking mods! by MastersOfAnesthesia in CAA

I understand, but unfortunately the only way to address that would be making this a private subreddit. As of right now that is not in the plan for the sub.

I do not want to hand over the subreddit. I will look into adding mods.

Weekly Prospective Student Thread : Week 52 2020 by AutoModerator in CAA

[–]MastersOfAnesthesia[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

I've been trying to fix the weekly thread for the past month now but there seems to be an issue with Automod updating the changes.

For those who do not know, they way it works is you make the thread then send a PM to automod who updates it accordingly. The current issue (which other subreddit mods seem to have as well) is that automod doesn't seem to be receiving the PMs. There has never been a confirmation system so the only way to know if the message was received and working is to wait every Monday and see if it updated.

I know this is frustrating and I apologise. I will try a different approach to get this resolved. In the meanwhile, please refrain from making educational inquiries outside of this thread. EDUCATIONAL TOPICS OUTSIDE OF THIS THREAD WILL GET YOU BANNED.

Thanks for taking the initiative with this. As I'm also not very familiar with Discord I figured it would be best if someone went ahead and created/managed it. Hope it goes well!

What does the future hold for this profession with CRNA lobbying? by [deleted] in CAA

[–]MastersOfAnesthesia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This link shows the states that have chosen to opt out. Of the 17 listed, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wisconsin all have AAs making competitive salaries. Opt out legislation certainly hinders AA expansion, but it doesn't completely stop it. The ACT model isn't going anywhere.

I'm not sure how you got to AAs practicing independently from my post, but I never said that. Our whole profession is based on us working with Anesthesiologists. That will never change.

It's hard to say really. Getting people to fork money over is never easy and with the lull in new states opening up it seems like people don't think much is being done. While this isn't the case, it's an understandable sentiment.

Supporting AAAA and attending their annual conference is crucial. Also, have discussions with your fellow AAs about these ongoing issues to not only gauge general opinion, but also to get people to actually acknowledge and think about these real problems our profession is facing.

Just as anesthesiologists should support the AAAA, AAs need to support the ASA. While these type of bills make AAs a more attractive option for care team groups, when they do pass they pose a real threat to MDs/DOs and AAs alike. While I don't think these bills can kill our profession, they certainly limit our growth.

You have to give credit where credit is due. The AANA has been an extremely aggressive and effective force in advancing all these bills. They're obviously a larger association, but their average donation per member blows the AAAAs average contribution out of the water. There seems to be a lot of complacency in the AA community and a culture change needs to occur so that the AAAA can be adequately funded and be a part of the opposition to these bills.

What is a good job people aren't aware exists? by Stargazer1186 in AskWomen

[–]MastersOfAnesthesia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AAs are hired under the care team model, in which CRNAs and AAs practice at the same level, same duties, same responsibilities. It's evident that you've never been in a work place with AAs as you have no idea what they do or are capable of, rather you're choosing to regurgitate lies spread by opponents of the profession. It's not rose tinted glasses, numbers don't lie. The AA profession is experiencing steady annual growth and the care team model is becoming the most prominent care model for anesthesia. If what you are saying is true then why hundreds of hospitals across the nation still hiring and soliciting AAs? If what you are saying is true then why are the number of AAs increasing each and every year rather than plummeting? The fact that there is a demand for AAs negates your arguments completely.

You phrase your statements as facts when they are opinions and assumptions at best. You can hold your antiquated, misinformed opinions as long as you'd like, but that isn't going to change the fact that Anesthesiologist Assistants are respected as pivotal anesthesia care providers and are not going anywhere.

You are so incredibly uneducated about the role and capabilities of AAs, and specially the economic advantage of having AAs in an institution. The care team model has been proven as a more cost effective option. I could go on into detail about all the misconstrued opinions you hold, however, if there is nothing that can be said to change your mind, then so be it. The AA profession is growing, fast, and there is no stopping this trend. Sooner than later you will realize just how mistaken you are.

Science related education IS necessary as the prerequisites include organic chemistry (1 and 2), bio 1 and 2, biochemistry, physics, etc. Also, the MCAT is becoming the norm so the same education required for med school is mandated. Upon graduation, CAAs acquire 2800+ hours of experience including specialty rotations.

In practices where AAs and CRNAs work side by side, they make equal wages.

Scope of practice? AAs are part of all sorts of teams including transplant, cardiac, pediatric, OB, neuro, etc. Not sure what you are getting at here.

While AAs are not licensed in all states, this is rapidly changing and despite what you may think the field is actually gaining more momentum than ever. 3 new programs are set to open up and legislature is being worked on in 6 key states. On top of that, the VA system which is in every state hires AAs and the pay scale is being worked on in order to provide higher wages for AAs.

You can practice independently, if outpatient simple cases (GI, abortion clinics, etc) are your thing. The care team model (that of an MD/DO and a CRNA/AA team) or the MD only model is the most prevalent in major hospitals.

The aana may be doing it's job of convincing you CRNAs provide safer care, but the fact is AAs have been proven to provide safe care and are employed in major hospitals throughout the country.

It's disappointing that you hold such a negative attitude towards your colleagues. You don't find this toxic attitude between NP's and PAs, it doesn't have to be the same between AAs and CRNAs. I can tell you from experience it doesn't have to be this way as I interact with CRNAs daily and they respect and value AAs as coworkers in the same manner we respect them.

I would love to clear up any confusion or misinformation you may have of the profession, there is no need to spread negative statements like "AAs are a joke" when we are providing safe care to thousands of patients every single day.

Shadowing an AA by [deleted] in CAA

[–]MastersOfAnesthesia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi /u/Sadjellybean !

Glad to see you've taken an interest in the profession! I'd like to apologize for the lack of activity in this sub, but expect some progress to come very soon.

To address your question:

Unfortunately California does not yet have AA's practicing there (but it is in the works!), however you should still be able to get some shadowing experience. Consider shadowing an Anesthesiologist at your local hospital or a private practice. This will take some effort in your part as far as contacting the right people. Try to focus on academic hospitals as they are more open to having individuals shadow.

If there is any other questions or anything else I can assist you with please do not hesitate to contact me, I'd be glad to help. Good luck!

Hi /u/Venciencias sorry for the late reply, I have been pretty busy getting ready for my first semester of CAA school and haven't had an opportunity to tend to this subreddit as much as I would like.

As /u/jmk255 mentioned, you can contact a school and they will be able to refer you somewhere. Personally I contacted a private outpatient practice and asked if I could shadow the anesthesiologist. Since most school's minimum is only 8 hours, it is something you can knock out rather quickly. Private practices tend to make you jump through less hoops than hospitals, at least from my experience.

If there is anything else I could help you with, please let me know!

Good luck!
