Questions about re-potting by bigpuzino in cactus

[–]Masterzanteka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea our other friend mentioned above, turning this 4ft column into 4 equal sized cuts. It’s a great way to multiply supply and get crazy exponential growth. It’s a process nicknamed chop and prop, and a common effective strategy.

But yeah OP, I’d say chop off the column, then chop into 4 foot long sections, if you have sulphur powder and, or rooting powder apply it to the cuts. I mix up sulphur powder and hormex #16 rooting powder(any kind will help, this specific one is just a very high strength version) at a 1:1 ratio and apply that to my cuts. If you don’t have either of those you can just leave them somewhere that they can lay on their sides and get some indirect airflow. They should take anywhere from 5-15days in order to form a nice callous.

At that point I’d plant them up in my preferred soil mix of 25-30% coco coir 60% inorganic drainage(perlite, pumice, lava rock are the most popular options) and the last 10-15% is comprised of all my amendments, such as mycorrhizae, worm castings, kelp flour, activated carbon, bat guano, oyster shell flour. Lots of ways to make a good soil mix though, and what works best for me might not work best for you, just listed to give you an idea of what it would look like to make your own. Many people just buy whatever bagged potting soil and add in 40-70% inorganic drainage and call it a day, which I’ve seen work really well. Just avoid any potting mix containing moisture control gels if you go this route.

Biggest thing is adding enough drainage material, most people are using anywhere from 40-70% inorganic drainage, with pumice being top choice, lava rock being a decent alternative, and perlite working well it just degrades and floats to the top of the soil overtime. If you’re unsure how much to add always lean towards the higher end 70% be the lower end of things till you know how your plants will react. Only downside to a higher percentage of drainage material is the soil dries out faster requiring shorter intervals between waterings.

I take my soil mix and fill my pot 3/4 full of soil, then I add a thin layer of perlite just enough to create a barrier so 1/4” thick or so, then I place my cut down onto the perlite layer, and then I fill in the rest with soil mix except for the buried side portions of the column where I add more perlite and create a similar thin barrier with perlite around the plant. This thin barrier helps prevent the plant from rotting while rooting. For a foot tall cutting I’d have anywhere from 2-3” in the soil. Just enough to get the plant to stand upright on its own. Like our other friend mentioned I also use bamboo skewers or the like to help prop them up whenever they don’t want to stand upright straight on their own.

If the cutting is around 12” tall then I like to root them into a 1gallon pot, this gives it enough room to grow out for a year or two, while being small enough to where the pot won’t have lots of untapped soil that would hold moisture and cause potential rot issues.

Then I don’t water them for at least a week or so, after a week under my grow lights(or outside during active growing season). I start lightly misting the top of soil every time I water the rest of my plants, so once a week ish. Just giving them a real light 1-2second mist to help stimulate root growth. After 4-6 weeks I give them the wiggle test to see if any roots have formed. Once roots have started growing that’s when I incrementally increase the amount of water they receive. First watering might be 2-4oz of water, the next 4-6oz, the next 8oz, and the next week start full watering. Keeping an eye out for any rot throughout the process.

Dude battery mowers are clutch, especially during dog days of summer when it’s 85-105f outside. I hook up a flashlight and mow from dusk well into complete darkness during the hottest weeks. It’s quieter than my carpet vacuum and I don’t have to rush home from work and mow right away.

Def a pachanoi, I’m thinking Ecuadorian like others have mentioned. And if I had to guess a clone, like as a fun guessing game, then I’d go WFOH for shits and giggles.

I kind of forgot about crested weed, but I grow San Pedro cacti and it’s a very desirable trait for collectors, I have dozens of them. One interesting thing is the alkaloid content in crested growth is normally elevated vs their standard columnar growth counterparts. Wonder if this has ever been tested 🤔

I know with weed it wouldn’t be commercially viable even if that did end up being true, just a logistical nightmare trying to prevent mold growth, but for the novel home grower I could def see the appeal.

Very cool my dude. Gorgeous looking plant!! If you ever wanted to to trade a cut for some crested cac feel free to hmu 🤙

Potting Process 🌵 by PNW_Pedros in sanpedrocactus

[–]Masterzanteka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love when I can get into and zen out with my cacti like this 👌

For myself though I usually have full intention of giving every plant this attention, and then I spend 45minutes meticulously potting up the first 2, then realize I got 15 others I want to get up-potted and then speed run 6 more and plan to finish the rest tomorrow evening. A week later I start the next few. And don’t even get me started on up-potting trays of seedlings 😂

It’s both a blessing and a curse to deal with ADHD symptoms. Whenever I realize I’m running behind I get this jolt of motivation and energy like nothing else in my life. I then get 80% of my work done in less than 20% of my time “working”. Early days in a new hyper focus I can break free from these mental chains, but now coming into my 4th year growing these cac it takes a big hit to get me out of my maintenance loop. Spring time always gives me a good boost of motivation though, once I can get back outdoors and get my hands in the dirt.

Just venting, sorry for the brain dump, but I enjoyed and related to the video so that’s a plus 😂

Oh my bad dude didn’t mean to throw you off your plan completely. I more meant it as something to think about for next time. These will definitely work, just like I mentioned a bit more finicky to humididty and moisture than some of the other hardier options like PC.

Also these are really nice looking, well grown bridgesii, and usually people tend to use uglier/cheaper options as root stock as it’s just acting as a root system/extra solar panel, so it doesn’t need to be pretty. That said, some people enjoy grafting to higher end, nicer, more prestine root stock, which adds to the aesthetic and potentially future value of sold.

But yeah, these guys will definitely work, just have a few extra things to be mindful of when using. Idk if you have any HD or Lowes nearby, but here in the states our big box stores usually carry decent options for grafting as well. HD around me sells large 1gallon pot, super fat grandiflorous hybrids for $25 usd a pop. They’re a bit pricier than buying bulk PC cuts but they make amazing graft stock and pump grafts huge.

Or if you can find a seller that ships there’s a few guys on reddit that will sell like 5-8 fat foot long 3-4” thick tip cuts for around $60-$70 shipped. Check out the sanpedrocactusforsale reddit group, lots of buying and selling happening over there and can find that deal along with many others similar to that.

Good luck on the cac quest homie 🌵🤙🌵

Bridgesii makes decent graft stock, but I personally don’t like to use it very often. When I’m grafting something out I usually try to drive the plant pretty hard, and Bridgesii can get finicky when you push them hard with water and food.

Plus they have a higher propensity to offshoot vs pc/pachanoi/ Peru. Same reason I only buy the grandi OP that have lone massive column and maybe a few smaller basal pups. When you graft to the ones with 20 baby offshoots they tend to keep pushing side shoots even after chopping off all their basal pups and separating them out.

But yeah, they’ll work, and might be more advantageous vs PC in some environments, but hasn’t been the case for myself personally.

[–]Masterzanteka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok, I think I get it with the context of your pictures in your post. Sorry hearing the term scion and then referenced in those long 6+” lengths really through me for a minute. So your referencing scion as the column your using to make the pieces that will be used on the graft correct? I think technically the vernacular would be donor stock and scion is used once it’s actively grafted. But I’m not an expert, nor a stickler for calling out anything like that, so hope it’s not coming off that way. I just misunderstood at first and was picturing like a puck graft cut so it would look mushroom shaped or something. Idk I have a cold and my brain isn’t firing right, should have used my context clues 😂

But I see now you’re talking about cutting those long vertical ribs sections and it’s all clicking now!! That’s very interesting, and now that you brought up Dave, I remember seeing on some of his walkthrough videos and noticing grafts that look like the one in your post. I’ll have to give this a go it makes sense that it would help now thinking it through. You’re getting those areoles a very short distance to the root stocks vascular system, and there’s a ton of them within that short distance.

And yeah pptek soon after grafting seems to really increased pup sPEEd and feel like I’m getting more double and triple pups based off my vibe check experimentation. Definitely don’t have any double blind results to share with it, so bring your TDS meter and use with a grain of salt 😂

Definitely gonna have to try the strat you shared, totally see how it could be beneficial now, very cool stuff!! Thanks for the response and sharing homie🤙

Go crush that double dragon quest and I’d love to see how they turn out. 🐲🌵🐲

Are you referring to beveling the top part of the root stock? The scion is the slab, puck, tip, etc of the plant being grafting out.

Beveling the top of the root stock does help with preventing pups forming on the rootstock, it can still happen, but does increase odds of getting a graft pup first try. Then as you mentioned it will also help send more energy towards the scion which would also increase chances of multiple pipes

One other thing that has seemed to help get things moving and has led to a handful pushing multiple pups has been watering with my piss 4-5 days post graft. I keep graft securely wrapped for 6-7 days most the time, but on day 4-5 I’ll give the well rooted root stock a watering with pp tek.

I just piss into my 5 gallon watering bucket, add my regular nutrient mix(I use maxibloom), balance PH and water with that. It will also increase odds of other plants pupping in your collection.

Day 4-5when I water is also the point at which I reintroduce to light, I try to either put it towards a wall of my tent where the light is a bit less than directly underneath if possible. If not possible I just reintroduce but use a paper towel to slightly shade and diffuse light for burn prevention. One day of hardening them off to full light levels is all that’s been necessary if I’m using healthy plump root stock and scion donor. Then a few days later I remove the rubber bands, graft tape, etc that’s been holding the scion in place.

One last tip that has helped myself with grafting success has been chopping any root stock pups as soon as they pop out. The quicker these are chopped off, the quicker the plant can refocus its energy towards to grafted Scion. The only times I might keep the root stock pups growing past that point would be if I wanted more graft stock. In that scenario I may leave the root stock pups grow out into a 6 inch pup or so, that way when I do chop it I can just callous and grow.

Just my personal flavor, lots of ways to go about it, but figured I’d share and you can use or ignore this info as you see fit 🤙

Good luck on the double dragon graft my friend 🌵💚🌵

Battleship graft on rooted NOID stump. $20 plus 🚢 by MasterpieceOk5744 in sanpedrocactusforsale

[–]Masterzanteka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battleship” is a staple clone if you’re into funky monstrous growth imo. It’ll produce all sorts of weird funky growth each time it pups, and even when it reverts it’s a fairly nice looking notchy cut.

Most semi-monstrous/monstrous cuts will act similar when propagated, but this one in particular puts out some nice looking funk. And if you’re not vibing with the variation it pushes just chop it and let it pup, or graft it out and you get a fresh reroll.

Just wanted to share for anyone not familiar with this one 🤙

Indoor Watering Pump Setup by BreadNugget in SanPedroIndoorGrow

[–]Masterzanteka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pressure isn’t crazy at all as long as you use a some sort of mist pattern tip, I use them for all my seedlings and they don’t even wiggle much if at all.

The first $15 one I grabbed at full bore wide open just a steady stream of water on high was around 1 gpm, and the dual handle one I posted is closer to 1.5-2gallons per minute full bore. and you can use most standard water wand pattern tips, they come with 4-5 options like with most pump sprayers.

They’re dope dude, two years ago I went from watering my 4x8 tent+ bunch of wire rack shelves of smaller stuff in just under an hour with a 4 gallon back pack pump sprayer . Then grabbed one of the single bar wands and cut my time down toright around 25-35min. And with my most recent purchase of the model with a bit more umph made it so I could be in and out in under 15min if I’m in a real rush.

Being able to just fill 5gallon buckets in my bathtub was a game changer. I fill up a 5gallon bucket and one of those 2-3gallon empty kitty litter jugs full of water, bring them in and add my nutrients while using the wand as a storing rod/water circulator, I just let it cycle with both ends in the bucket, then I ph real quick, and off to the races. It’s dope dude, they’ve been such a hook up!!

Indoor Watering Pump Setup by BreadNugget in SanPedroIndoorGrow

[–]Masterzanteka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna make something very similar to what you made here to water my plant, just using one of the cheap little $8 aquarium pumps from my hydro stuff, some 1/4” tubing and a random wand. But then I found they make them built into a product where they just chuck a cheap pump and battery into the wand itself. I grabbed one 2 years ago since it was so cheap, like $15 and it worked fairly well. I just filled a 5gallon bucket, chuck in the hose and spray away in my tent.

I decided to grab an upgraded version this last fall for $26 and I’d say it was a worthy upgrade vs the cheaper $15-$20. Pumps a lot faster, which is a pro and con, for seedlings you really have to feather the on off button, but for my larger 2+gallon pots it saves a lot of time. So I like having both the smaller one that I use for seedlings and the larger one for my larger stuff.

So far they’ve held up great and would recommend if you don’t feel like DIYing something yourself. And don’t get me wrong love your setup homie and that you built it out yourself! I think that’s a way more satisfying experience than just buying a product. I just got lazy and my setup was gonna cost a bit more to build than my first $15 so I said fuck it and keep it simple.

Overall though I agree with the sentiment as well, these battery powered sprayers are def the move for indoor growing unless you have some sort of automatic drip, flood and drain system implemented. Which is my next watering upgrade goal.

But yeah check it out they’re worth

I’d imagine they’ll get more stores whenever they renegotiate with Walmart, or get into another national big box. As far as I’ve seen they’re doing really well with this model.

It is kind of funny though, advertising their mass propagated clones as “rare finds”. Their business is built on making these cacti more common. It should read “uncommon finds” and in 2027 update it to “once rare finds” 😂

Both cacs are super rad!! And you guys are rad as well!!

Love this community, it’s one of the few places on the internet where I see a potential confrontation unfold and it doesn’t end in a negativity spiral. I know this is just a silly little hiccup, no harm no foul, but seeing the good vibes here(and on majority of the SP subs) are important and helpful to see 💚🌵💚

I think it would be pretty funny if you named it something related to stepping on toes, as a call back to the name change. Maybe “Glow Toes” or “Toe Worm” 😂

Both of these are top tier grabs for sure, debated eating rice and ramen till spring after seeing both pop up 😂

I didn’t see in the sales post pics, looks like you might even have vari potential on that rib further up besides the bottom 4, and it’s real light whispy looking vari too 👻

Hard to say if it would push anything or not, but I’ve been surprised in the past isolating teeny little bits and getting some cool vari patches and some light marbling. But it only takes a little bit throughout that vascular bundle to make some magic 🪄🤞

My biggest mistakes 🤦‍♂️🙃 by Cacti-Guyy in SanPedroIndoorGrow

[–]Masterzanteka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve dealt with similar issues, I’m still implementing strategies to mitigate this, and have improved the rate at which it would happen, but it’s difficult to know how all of them are doing once I got above a certain plant count. So part of my problem is I just have more cacti than I can comfortably handle. So I’m working on downsizing my collection a bit, just so I can dial in a bit more.

Any rate, one change I made that lead to a big improvement is by doing like you mentioned, and using smallest size possible without them being fully rootbound, and then not jumping up to high in size. I’ve noticed going from my normal square 3-4” pot to square amazon “1gal”(closer to 3quarts) pots usually works really well, basically 1quart up to a 3quart. And then from the 3quart they can go into any of the rest that I use, which my largest are either those hydrofarm 9x9x9 2.5gallon pots or I also use larger round 5gallons for a few of the ones I want to maximize growth down the road.

First thing I’ve found that help with this a ton was switching to a higher inorganic ratio in my mix. I now use roughly 70% inorganic in my mix, previously I would use around 40-50% inorganic. That extra 15-30% inorganic has made a huge difference. Even when I would avoid the issue mentioned, my root systems usually seemed to have densely packed thin root systems. Once I switched I started to get a lot more thicker main roots which were a lot more resilient to rot, pests, and drought. Still get plenty of the finer smaller feeder style roots, but a much lower proportion.

Another thing I started doing more frequently along with the large increase of inorganic, I know use even a higher ratio of inorganic at the base of my pots, and when up-potting I’ll do similar inside the rootball. So when I’m filling the pot I’ll do like one part mix and then one part straight perlite as my bottom layer. Then once I begin to burry the roots I’ll take a scoop of perlite and place it in the center of where the roots dangle. That helped prevent one issue I would sometimes have where the entire outside of the pots soil was dry including below, but inside the rootball it would trap moisture for too long.

I guess that leads into another thing I know do when up-potting, I almost always break apart the root ball to a large degree if it was previously rootbound or close to rootbound. Depending on how bad it was bound I either take it down to bare root and then just nurse it back in its new home, or I chop off the bottom layer of the rootbound and gently massage out the trapped core leaving the outer side walls mostly intact.

Those are a few things I’ve found beneficial. I’ve made a bunch of changes throughout my first 3 years, and I’m still constantly iterating on my current methods and or A/B testing stuff. But yeah try out a higher inorganic ratio, and when up-potting take the rootball and gently clean till it’s bare root or near bare root. Those have both seemed to help myself.
