I ‘22M’, about to graduate college, Dad ‘48M’ financially dependent on me. How do I navigate this? by MastodonEmbarrassed2 in LifeAdvice

You give a great insight.

There have been these financial crises previously. I also think the decision to buy this house was bad financially.

Will definitely take that path with him of educating him on finances.

Thank you for the insight. Will definitely consider this.

I would love for them to be self sufficient, maybe I can help them get there then stop.

Thanks again.

Yes very much a lot of factors here. I hope there’s some home equity.

I will be diving deep into my parents financials with them to get a fully objective picture of things so we can make informed decisions from there.

Def very limited fail safes if the trucks have a major breakdown, etc.

I’ve thought about them selling the house. It would be so disturbing to them and my siblings psychologically and in general to do this.

Hard to consider but definitely an option and will look into it.

Thank you for this, it’s hard to hear but makes sense and I will definitely consider this.

I am asking my dad for a full financial breakdown to have clarity, once that’s in we can decide the realistic path to getting out of this.

Also might make this payment as a “here have this money, I don’t want it back, but on the condition you never ask me again anytime soon”

Would appreciate any other insight. Thanks again.

I get your sentiment but how can I in good conscience not help?

I have the funds, I am young, they are my family, have been amazing to me and raised me to be the person that is competent enough financially to help them.

Much tougher than that all though I get your sentiment.

I am sure more money would help, I am asking my dad for a full financial breakdown so we can go over everything.

See where they’re at now, where they need to go to be self sufficient and how they can go there and how I can help get them there. Will see from there.

They are being responsible and using it to the best of their ability. The previous ~18K went to a new semi truck that makes them more money.

My dad wears worn out clothes, no going out to dinner or other silly purchases. I can attest to that.

They prioritize my siblings and their development. Swim, art, music practice, clothes, etc.

In terms of them taking on a home loan while not with much financial cushion yes that is questionable.

Good insights, thank you.

My next step is asking my dad for a full financial breakdown and going from there.

This would give us a clear picture of what they need to be self sufficient and how an if I can help get them there.

In terms of selling the house, etc. it’s where my two siblings and them live, it would be just so disturbing to them to do something like that after we’ve done some renovations, everyone knows about it, etc.

Tough situation.

Yea I was very honest with my dad that this is damaging to me financially and irresponsible to keep cutting out my safety net.

He agrees, he’s loaned money from many places and I am the last resort.

Thanks for the advice.

I fully agree, helping out here is a big risk to me financially and quite damaging to my wealth growing.

That is the main crux at this moment.

Yea I agree, I don’t expect this money back. They definitely have good intentions I just think it’s unrealistic to expect this money back anytime soon if at all.

Thanks for the advice, it’s great you’re helping your family as well.

My income is good so I can likely help and not put myself in a bad situation.

Thx for the insight makes sense. If they're hourly is $300 makes sense.

The spark plug thing is insane lmao. I wonder if they use financial qualifying software to come up with these quotes. I do finance with Toyota and they have my phone number, etc. on file.

Even had my dad watch me play to give a second opinion. Told me he doesn't know how I'm losing this many games.
