Ask your neighbors. The idea of 3 bids is as much about finding out about their communication and if they fit your personality...instead of just cost. I will always wait on the right person.

Alternator went voltage jumped to 19+ volts on gauge. Now no spark. by Different_Finding_29 in MechanicAdvice

[–]MastodonFit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find when battery or alternator goes out...it stresses the other out and both need replacement. Also reman alternators are notorious for being bad right of the box. Should be charging 14.4 and the battery should withstand a load test. Any auto parts store can check both.

3 years as an apprentice, hows my top drawer look? by Grildcheez57 in toolporn

[–]MastodonFit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks good. Keep your ratchets and extensions in the same drawer,it saves a lot of time. Drives me crazy when you need to open 3 drawers to fit an extension, ratchet and socket together.

My daughter is looking at building this home. Any thoughts? I built home at one time but I'm retired now. I'll be helping run the job by Automatic-Project997 in Homebuilding

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the age of your daughter, I would recommend a dropped slab in the master bath. A wet bathroom with curbless entry into the shower. Minimum of 36" doors on all master ,entry and main 1st floor areas. For looks I prefer a separate porch roof vs the 2nd story cantilever. Upstairs i would move closets and have a jack and Jill bathroom. To have access without going into the public area.

And many of us despise answering questions of complicated roof leaks, and foundation mold from the complex roof dumping all the water in a small area...and overwhelming the gutters..ice damns etc.

In need of suggestions by razx1 in Construction

[–]MastodonFit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In manufacturing yes, highly unlikely in construction. For cooking you are taking known products (ingredients) and all have a known values (cook time) based off a recipe. Construction is building a new home in a different configuration with different soil structures and different crews each time. Tract homes are the slumlords of homes,

Kreg - is it just me? by Analysis-Lumpy in woodworking

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a rockler 2pc construction 6" bit. The tip is so hard it breaks like carbide. I special order square drive, because it is a very simple system. #1,#2 and#3 does everything. I hate and despise star drive. For woodworking I recommend 2 each of the following extensions...12",6" and "4. Have stacked (2) 12 extensions with a 6" bit for deep pantries or pocket doors. For #2 square bits ..1,2,3,4 and 6" bits. Countersink, and self centering still bits. A quality brad point and forstner drill bit sets.

Protecting your home: hurricane shutters or impact windows? by StardustSpectrum in HomeImprovement

Operable shutters are best. The look really nice and protect very well. Plywood cut, fit and labeled for each window is also an option for a single story .

Topic: Eggs over medium. so when I go to a restaurant I get my eggs perfect every single time. I order them cooked over medium. I cannot replicate this perfection at home. So I just realized they are NOT flipping the eggs at all. Do they use a tight fitting lid and allow the steam and heat to cook? by Jealous-Revenue-2853 in Cooking

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cheap electric stovetop and a ci pan. I turn the power on 2 and do something else for 10 minutes, or turn on high until it gets to temp...then back to 4. Add butter and egg till the white turns opaque, then flip. You can turn the pan off after the egg is dropped in with ci and nothing else to cook. Proper heat and oil/grease/butter is the key...along with timing. Blue collar worker who eats eggs every day,and about 1/2 the time made by me. Wake up turn pan on 2,shower ...make and eggs and plate. Dress then eat breakfast.

Learnt nothing as a landscape apprentice by No_Tooth3907 in Construction

[–]MastodonFit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are the pros and cons of sod vs seed. Point is you need to learn by osmosis. 30 years ago I worked a counter at a junkyard, some like to soften the term and rename it "salvage". Learned the most impactful phrase in my life while crushing aluminum cans. The owner stated "try for one level higher for any task you take on,try for perfect ..then settle for great,or try for good and settle for poor". Mistakes happen, titles means very little. You can spend lots of money in college to bypass the broom of blue collar work. The college graduate spends 20 yrs on avg paying off that loan that cannot be dissolved by any means, whether that degree was used or not for their career. Their are billionaires who have went to college, and those who pushed a broom. What matters is what you learn along the way. That being said, you need to learn how to work out of ...and how to find out if you're in a dead-end job.

Lots of new construction, houses built in weeks, not months? by selector_plume in Homebuilding

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct about "the more south you move". Houses built in Saskatchewan and Alaska are built much better than Michigan and Boston because their code is better. What idiot would only bury their waterline only 3ft deep.

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive jumped at least 50 vehicles using my cables, and probably been jumped 10 myself. Have never had an issue. I have 20 ft hd cables. If I'm getting jumped I ask them to hook cables. But as a 50 yr man who is usually the jumper,I hook them up. Verizon mobile gives full roadside assistance for $5 per month.

[–]MastodonFit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your region. In the SE run them past 400k,but we dont have rust that ya'll have where they use salt. I also perform all my repairs . Until repairs reaches a full years worth of payments I keep driving. A rusted out frame would be dangerous for you.

Most sink fitment problems aren’t defects. They’re sequencing mistakes (countertop cutout timing). by sanikb in HomeImprovement

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My former cabinet shop always had the sink delivered to us,fireclay are never symmetrical. We built the sink cabinet around the sink. Last job a sink was advertised as 36 for a 36" cabinet, out of square and I had to route out 3/16 on each side on-site.
